Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Are you excited?  By the time you read this we will be days away from the quilt show.  It’s an exciting time.  We get to see what we have all been working on for so long.  We get to brag a little on what we entered.  And we get to SHOP.  Not that we need much of a push on this.  But this year we have some new vendors.  We are displaying more quilts than we ever have and they are hanging in areas we have not used before.  It’s going to be a wonderful experience.

I have faith that once again you will show up to volunteer and help run this show.  You have never failed us and I know you won’t now.  Plano guild members are a wonderful bunch of ladies and gentlemen, who always come through to help produce this excellent all volunteer event.

The purpose of our quilt show, besides displaying our art, is to fund our guild.  Didn’t the program group do a good job last month on showing us what is coming up?  We have had and will continue to have great programs and workshops and community service projects.  But that takes money.  We need our quilt show to provide that money.

So now, I have to do labels for my entries—both judged and special exhibits.  Nothing like the last moment to get you in gear.  Can’t wait to see you all at the quilt show!

As you might know, the quilt show is upon us!   Two last minute requests: (1) Volunteers are still needed.  Check the schedule at plano.org. (2) Come enjoy the show and bring your friends, quilters and non-quilter’s alike.   While you are at the show, buy a few more raffle tickets–all those bags could be yours!

Looking ahead, these roles will be open for 2023:  Demos, Publicity Mailings, Special Exhibits, and Quilt Angels.  If you might be willing to step up, please reach out to the ladies in those roles this year, or myself.  Carolyn

Quilt Show Preview Night & General Meeting

September Guild Meeting – Thursday, September 8, 2022

Carol Morrissey
Lecture: Confessions of an Absent-Minded Quilter

Carol Morrissey is a fifth-generation Texas quilter who embraces that heritage with enthusiasm. Her work reflects her love of photography, gardening, nature, and painting. Carol began sewing clothing as a child but didn’t make her first quilt until she was in her thirties. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally and is in many private collections. She enjoys providing programs and workshops to quilt guilds and other groups, sharing her love of quilting, her inspirations, and her techniques with others.

Workshop:  Fabric Post Cards

Date:  September 9, 2022 , 10:00am – 4:00pm

Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm (1-hour lunch)

Location:  Best Little Retreat Center of Texas, 7989 Belt Line Rd Ste #168, Dallas, TX 75248

Workshop Fee:  $45.00

This has been Carol’s most popular workshop for several years. These colorful little pieces are fun to create, they’re quick, and they make great gifts. Plus, they’re a standard size, so they can be easily and inexpensively framed! Carol has three different postcard collections from which to choose (pattern purchase is required for the workshop). And, as a bonus, if you give Carol enough advance notice, she will design a couple of original postcards just for your group! Class duration is typically five to six hours.

Workshop:  Hippy Dippy Dot Collage

Date:  September 10, 2022 , 10:00am – 4:00pm

Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm (1/2 hour lunch)

Location:  Best Little Retreat Center of Texas, 7989 Belt Line Rd Ste #168, Dallas, TX 75248

Workshop Fee:  $45.00

Join Carol for this fun, fused project! We’ll experiment with positive and negative shapes while playing with color and design elements. The class project is a wall hanging measuring approximately 20” x 27” (up to 20” x 36”). Carol will offer suggestions for several ways to use these fused collages. She will also give you a free pattern for a mini journal cover that you can make later from a small fabric collage. Carol will bring her die cutters and a variety of circle dies for you to use. No sewing machine is required unless you wish to work on the mini journal cover during the class.

Community Service

By Linda Neal

Community Service will be taking off the month of August due to the Quilt Show.  We will NOT have our 2nd Tuesday Sit/Sew Drop off day at Plano Sewing Center.  But I will be at the quilt show both days.  So, if you have completed items you really want out of your house, bring them to the show and give them to me.  I will have a wagon in the Quilt Show Volunteer room designated for Community Service items.  I will NOT have any items to give out until the September guild meeting.  See you at the show!

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

It’s time to do something fun! The Shades of Blue & White: Floating Point Star block exchange will be announced at the September Guild Meeting. This is a combination challenge/block exchange – participate at whatever level you would like. You could make a small wall hanging or quilt on your own with your own blocks. Or you might like to exchange blocks with guildmates! Bring your block(s) to the October guild meeting. As many blocks as you bring, you will get to take home from the other participants.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

The Floating Point Star pattern includes generous seam allowance so that you will square your blocks up and then still have floating points after you sew your ¼” seam, so if you’re a little big or shy on your ¼”, there is plenty of room to get accurate blocks. Shades of Blue & White means that your block background will be white, cream, tan or somewhere in between (low volume prints or something that is solid or reads solid). Your star centers and points should be a shade of blue – anything ranging from blue to teal to navy. The pattern will explain everything. Sample block shown here.

A New Group –> Bag Making Zoom Group – Donna Petrick

I haven’t forgotten that I asked for people who would be interested in a bag making small group meeting on Zoom………..I just seem to be a little short of time.  I did have several of you who indicated you would like this.  So let me try again to get this one up and running.  I have a couple of bags I want to make, just need to find the time.  Let me know if you want a day time or night time meeting.  Email me at petrickdl@outlook.com and I promise to start this small group.

Worker Bees – Third Thursday on Zoom – Sharon McGinnis

We are buzzing with excitement to start this new group! Held via Zoom on the 3rd Thursday of each month — August 18, at 6:30pm.  This small group is a great fit for anyone with time available in the evenings. This group will include ANY type of quilting activity—piecing, hand quilting, machine quilting, embroidery, you name it. The name of our game is friendship and fellowship around our virtual quilting circle. Contact Sharon McGinnis at sharon.mcginnis@verizon.net to be added to the roster and a Zoom link will be sent out a day or two before each meeting. Any questions can also be directed to Sharon at 972-467-5799.

Sew Happy Quilters – Aurora Chancy

We meet at Sam Johnson Senior Center corner of 75 and 16th Steet on  first Thursdays 9:00 to 4:00. We are a sit-n-sew, so bring your favorite project and enjoy the fellowship!  Contact Aurora Chancy achancy@msn.com

Featherweight Fellowship Groups – Jeanne Vogel

Singer Featherweight sewing machines  make happy owners as we sit and sew. We share tips for caring for the machine, our best notions, and have several members experienced with problem-solving both machine and quilting problems. If you work, join us on a Saturday!  When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending.  Those who have not previously notified me, please email pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

  • Chicks with Feathers—3rd Saturdays Zooming 1-3pm — (Formerly at Sunrise of Plano)
  • Fourth Friday Featherweight Friends—4th Fridays @ 1-3pm on Zoom or in person meeting at Best Little Retreat Center in Texas all day.
Pieceful Organization – Sarah Krauss & Jeanne Vogel   (Now we will meet twice a month!)

If you are feeling “abode overload,” we will:  relieve clutter, stress, struggle and feelings of being overwhelmed.  We are Zooming on the 3rd and the 4th Wednesday’s from 1:30-3:30 pm using the inspiration from a workshop we attended.  Organization will change your clutter and chaos to start the day fresh with your stuff organized.  Less chaos leads to more productive quilt making.  Please contact pickincotton26@verizon.net for an invitation.

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Our meetings have been a huge success.  It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs.  A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We also share our samples and ask/answer questions.  Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798

Hand Applique Small group – Linda Neal

We meet the first Monday of each month at 10:00 on Zoom.  Our August meeting will be August 1st at 10:00. If you are interested in joining our hand applique Zoom group, please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

English Paper Piecing Small Group – Linda Neal

We meet on the third Tuesday at 10:00 on Zoom. August 16th is our next meeting.  Whether you are new to English Paper Piecing or a pro, we would love to have you join our group.   Our group is informal and fun!!  For a link,  please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

Hoop It Up Bee Donna Petrick

The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom.  We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell.  We are open to all levels of users.  If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us.  Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.
