LETTER FROM GUILD PRESIDENT – Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

Dates to Remember

(Please wear your name tag)

  • Dec. 10 – Community Service Sew Day 10am – 2pm
  • Dec. 12 – Guild Holiday meeting–bring your holiday/winter themed wrapped gift & something to eat at the holiday table
  • Dec. 12 – Bones Table with donation fabrics
  • Dec. 16 – Board meeting
  • Jan.  9 – Guild meeting

Wow! What a crowd we had at the November meeting – That was a record 113 in the room and a record 25 members on zoom. What a great community of quilters!

And what a wonderful blessing to have as we had a large donation from a quilter whose family donated bins and bins of fabric, started projects and 8 quilt tops that were finished but needed backing and quilting. Community Service will take those to quilt and bind and be able to pass those along as we approach the cold weather.

Also in her stash were several complete Block of the Months that Membership will be displaying for a drawing. If you are interested, put your name in for the drawing. We want them to go to a good home!

If you were asking Santa for more fabric for Christmas, we have about 10 bins/boxes of fabric for you to pick up at the December meeting.  There is a Santa Claus quilt top that needs to be finished and lots of Scottish terrier fabric. And more fabric–lots of fat quarters, small cuts, Aunt Gracie’s and more scraps. Come and fill your stocking with the colors of your choice!

It’s a must to visit the new website! Our thanks for the collaborative effort to get the Quilt Show site up and running and upgrading to have Vendors & Sponsors register online–that’s without mail, checks, and paper! It’s a new day for us!

– Jeanne

 Workshop

Nova Montgomery: Singer Featherweight Maintenance

December again?  Where has the year gone! As we close out 2024 it’s hard to fit everything in. Do take a few hours out December 12 to join your Quilty friends for a Holiday Party. Besides the food and other fun, Tisha Harms will be joining us for a little educational on Daughters of the American Revolution – DAR for short.

January will be bringing us Sherry Mark to teach us some batting tidbits, so think about your upcoming projects…she will have batting for purchase. And don’t forget to check your calendar for Nova Montgomery’s Singer Featherweight Maintenance workshop in February.  As of now we have only ONE slot left in the Friday, February 14, 2025 workshop.  If we fill that up we can open up a workshop for Saturday, February 15.  There are some members interested that can only attend Saturday, so if someone is waiting to sign up for Friday, please let us know so we can fill it up!  Registration forms to drop off at the meeting, or mail in are available on the website; and online registration should also now be available. (Select on the top tab bar Activities>Workshops). See you at Guild Meeting!

QUILTS of VALOR

We had a beautiful day to honor six vets with quilts, two in their hospital rooms and four at the East Plano Rotary Flags of Honor. The pictures show the fabulous job the Rotary does with the 10 day event, and shows the types of quilts that tend to be favorites.

QUILT PLANO 2025

There’s lots to celebrate this month for QP25!

Let’s start with our Show logo!  Kudos to Ashley Stovall for not only designing the fabulous raffle quilt, but for creating a beautiful logo to go with it!

The online applications for sponsors and vendors are active and they started coming in within a matter of minutes! That’s a testament to how fabulous Quilt Plano is and what a great value it brings!

At the December meeting, you’ll be able to view the stunning Deco at Dusk Raffle Quilt and be the first to buy your raffle tickets! So bring that cash with you and grab a few stacks for stocking stuffers!

  • Pricing is the same:
    $20 (25 tickets)
  • $10 (12 tickets)
  • $5 (6 tickets)
  • $1 (1 ticket)

*Since this is a Guild fundraiser, we encourage all Guild members to purchase at least $20 worth.

Also at the December meeting, you’ll be able to pick up a stack of bookmarks that feature the Deco at Dusk quilt.

Thank you in advance to our QP25 Committee members who have volunteered their time to organize and produce the Show. You’ll meet them at the January Guild meeting! And thank you in advance to those who volunteer their time at the Show to ensure our guests, vendors, and sponsors have an amazing event!

QGP Awards, Bars, Show Charms  and Show Pins

The Quilters Guild of Plano recognizes members and rewards them to show evidence of their involvement in the guild.  Our awards are PVSA – Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Lone Star Awards, Service Year Bars and Quilt Show Charms.

The PVSA awards are in conjunction with the US government.  President Ronald Reagan started the program to honor people who voluntarily give hours of their time to help others.

  • Bronze pins are given for 150 to 249 hours.
  • Silver pins are given for 250 to 499 hours.
  • Gold pins are given for 500 plus hours.
  • After completing 4000 hours a lifetime pin is awarded.

The Lone Star Award is given by the guild president as she recognizes people who go above and beyond their normal assistance to the Guild. This can be given at any time or not at all.

The Guild offers a black enameled sewing machine to hold the annual Service Year Bars for $5.

Service Year Bars are awarded for doing 30 hours of any service to the guild.  This can include making a mini quilt for the show auction or for community service, activities, but is not limited to these activities.  All hours run for the calendar year (not fiscal).  You may submit your hours monthly or annually to the finance vice president or the designee.

Quilt Show charms are given to anyone who works at least 2 hours for the show.

Our Quilt Plano show pins are custom enamel pins that feature the show’s logo, along with the year and sell for $5. Each year, the logo is inspired by a quilt block found in the raffle quilt pattern, making these pins a special keepsake. Members love collecting each year, starting at the show’s rollout in May, creating a fun way to look back on past shows and the unique raffle quilts that accompanied them.

We have past quilt show pins for sale for $1.00.

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!)

Monica Hendewerk

Join in!  It’s fun and productive.  Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  A number of us “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Do the designs that we send or do your own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We share our samples, ask/answer questions, and chat.  It’s a great way to make friends.

Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798
