2021 Challenges

August-September 2021 Challenge

Create a Mystery Project

The August & September activity is a 2-part mystery. This is a great opportunity to use up scraps especially those left over binding strips, but feel free to use whatever makes your heart happy.

August - Part 1

For the month of August, take various width fabric strips at least 11” long and sew them together to make a section that is 11" x 11". You will need 24 - 11” x 11” blocks. You will also need (24) 10” squares of a background fabric.

That's it for August! The next step will be released in the September newsletter.

September - Part 2

The last part of our mystery is as follows:

  1. Take the strip sets you have put together that are 11 x 11 and trim them to 10” squares.
  2. Slice half of your blocks diagonally once from the top left to the bottom right.
  3. Slice the other half of your blocks diagonally once from the bottom left to the top right.
  4. Take your 10” background squares and cut each diagonally once.
  5. Sew pieced triangles to background triangles to make half-square-triangle squares.
  6. We will put 6 blocks across the top and 8 blocks down the side for a twin size quilt. (When it says reference chart, the 6 across by 8 down is the chart.)

We will reveal our creations at the November guild meeting!

April 2021 Challenge

Create a Wall Hanging Featuring Your Initial

For our April activity, we'd like everyone to create a wall hanging that features your initial. It can be first name, last name, or the initial from your nicknamewhichever is your preference. I found several websites where you can print out templates of the alphabet in different styles should you need one. Be creative and let the wall hanging tell us a little about you. Since we will have a speaker in April, please submit photos to Activities@qgplano.org preferably by April 8th in order for us to put together a nice show & tell.

March 2021 Challenge

Support for Quilts of Valor (March Program Topic)

Our January activity will be to support our March program speaker, Suzanne DiCarlo of Quilts of Valor. What a great opportunity to say thank you to our veterans. I am so excited about this upcoming program.

Let's see how many quilt tops (even if you don't get it quilted by then) we can have to show.

If you need any ideas for patterns, please visit https://www.qovf.org/quilt-patterns/

The recommended size of a Quilt of Valor is 60″ x 80″; it must be a minimum of 55″ x 65″ and maximum of 72″ x 90. The Quilt consists of a top, batting, and backing. It must be machine or hand quilted. A tied quilt is not acceptable for a Quilt of Valor.

More information can be found at https://www.qovf.org.

Not able to make an entire quilt? Check out their 2021 Block drive: https://www.qovf.org/in-the-news/2021-national-block-drive/

February 2021 Challenge

Show us your Shibori

While this really isn't an activity that you have to make, so many of us fell in love with Debbie Maddy's Shibori fabrics. Send photos for show and tell at the February 2021 guild meeting!
