Quilters Guild of Plano, Inc.
This month’s meeting will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023.
We will be meeting in person at the Plano Event Center, 2000 East Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX.
Letter from the President
By Donna Petrick
The last two months I’ve awarded the Lone Star Award to several of the guild members. Since we try to keep our business meetings short, I haven’t taken the time to explain about the awards from the guild. Now is a good time to explain.
We award several different ones for volunteering exceptional time to the guild. First: Year Bars–for donating 30 hrs of time to the guild you can receive a “year bar”. This can include making community service items, going to other guilds selling raffle tickets, or working for any of the different jobs that help. Second: Presidential Service Awards–some years ago, President Reagan started a program recognizing the work of volunteers all over the US. For at least 150 hours of work for the guild you can receive a presidential pin and award. The government has gotten really slow about responding to our request, but we eventually receive the awards. The awards differ depending on the number of hours donated. Third: Lone Star Awards–the president of the guild can award Long Star Awards to anyone who does an exceptional job for the guild that is not associated with their own job. Four: Show Charms. If you work 4 hours or more for the quilt show, doing anything associated with the quilt show, you can receive a show charm.
I’ve always joked that we work for “junk jewelry”. But I wear my awards with pride. I enjoy doing things for the guild and love to see others doing the same. I encourage you to keep up with your hours and report them to Tisha Harms. She’s the one that records these hours and keeps up for the first three. Dolores Williams will keep up the show hours and will hand out the charms at the show.
The one award that we have lost but still hope to recover is the information for our anniversary pins. When you had been a member for 10 consecutive years you received a 10-year pin, followed by new ones for each additional five years. In one of our website conversions, we lost the ability to record the hours on the website and have fallen behind in keeping up with the information. We have not been able to recover, but I’ve not given up hope of going back and recovering.
We are so proud and relieved that the Guild survived the pandemic. It forced us to grow and change, and we responded well. Since the pandemic seems to be in the rear view mirror, we are discontinuing the Zoom feature of our meetings when the presentation is in person. In the future, if the speaker is off-site, the meeting will be on Zoom.
Our next meeting will be preview night at the quilt show. I hope that you will be able to join us that night and get a look at all the wonderful quilts and exhibits being displayed. Right now, I still need to finish my workshop samples for the special exhibits display. I need to quilt two of them and that is a chore for me. I’ve put it off as long as I can. Now is the time to finish.
Happy stitching all!

Quilt Plano 2023
By Carolyn Cosgriff
The Show is just days away! It’s going to be fun. We have lots of quilts, vendors, and demonstrations.
All entries have been emailed the drop off and pick up instructions, twice-on July 5 and again on July 17-19. If you haven’t seen yours, please check your spam/junk folder. If you still don’t find it, email Tisha at showregistration@qgplano.org. Don’t forget all quilts, including special exhibits, need protection: a pillowcase with your name and phone number pinned to the pillowcase. Don’t pin the pillowcase closed so we can’t get the quilt out.
A few dozen volunteer opportunities remain open. There are a variety of times and types of jobs–sitting or standing. We are still in need of people to shadow the key positions for next year. Even if you can’t commit at this time, please consider shadowing vendors, set-up and registration.
Volunteers may park in either lot. The volunteer room has moved to the east entrance due to construction. You can park at the west entrance, and walk in the air conditioning to the volunteer room to check your purse and check in. The list of openings is at qgplano.org. Security and Quilt Angels are needed during the show.
Don’t forget about the raffle quilt. Please remember to sell your tickets!
The mini-quilt auction pictures are posted on the web site. Tell your friends-–one need not be present to buy a mini.
There are T-Shirts left in a few sizes. They will be available at the Event Center, if you want to buy one. If you have a T-shirt, please wear it in public and tell folks about the show.
This is the final push for publicity and ticket sales. The publicity team has done a great job! Postcards were mailed to all prior years’ attendees (excluding guild members). If you are on Facebook, please share/like the ad posting. If you are on Nextdoor, please indicate you are coming to the show. Several members in different neighborhoods have posted on NextDoor. If you don’t find the Show under events in your neighborhood, please post an event. Our ad in StarLocalMedia includes a link to buy tickets. And, of course, remind your friends and neighbors to come! Tickets are available online (www.qgplano.org) until Thursday or at the door.
See you at the Show!
Quilt Show T-Shirts — $20
T-shirts in a few sizes are still available.

I hope everyone is as excited about Quilt Plano 2023 as I am. I cannot wait!
Our outreach efforts continue to be a success! Our totals for the month of June and 2023 are below:
A friendly reminder – are you working on your Birthday Quilt for the 2023 Challenge? With a birthday in October, mine is “almost” complete. It’s easy to participate! Each member who donates a completed quilt (including quilting and binding) in celebration of their birthday month, will be entered into a drawing for a fat quarter bundle. We’ll have the prize on display at the September meeting. We promise, it won’t disappoint!

The Bag Group is now meeting and we are looking forward to making bags and having fun. We are meeting the 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 pm. If you want to join in, please email me to be placed on the Zoom meeting notice. petrickdl@outlook.com
Worker Bees – Third Thursday on Zoom – Sharon McGinnis
We are buzzing with excitement to start this new group! Held via Zoom on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Our next meeting will be August 17th at 7:00 pm. This small group is a great fit for anyone with time available in the evenings. This group will include ANY type of quilting activity—piecing, hand quilting, machine quilting, embroidery, you name it. The name of our game is friendship and fellowship around our virtual quilting circle. Contact Sharon McGinnis at sharon.mcginnis@verizon.net to be added to the roster and a Zoom link will be sent out a day or two before each meeting. Any questions can also be directed to Sharon at 972-467-5799.
Sew Happy Quilters – Aurora Chancy
We meet at Sam Johnson Senior Center corner of 75 and 16th Steet on 1st Thursdays and 3rd Thursdays 9:00 to 4:00. We are a sit-n-sew, so bring your favorite project and enjoy the fellowship! Contact Aurora Chancy achancy@msn.com
Pieceful Organization – Sarah Krauss, Jeanne Vogel, Monica Hendewerk (Now we meet every Wednesday afternoon)
If you are feeling “abode overload,” we will: relieve clutter, stress, struggle and feelings of being overwhelmed. We are Zooming on the 3rd and the 4th Wednesday’s from 1:30-3:30 pm using the inspiration from a workshop we attended. Organization will change your clutter and chaos to start the day fresh with your stuff organized. Less chaos leads to more productive quilt making. Please contact mhendewerk@gmail.com for an invitation.
Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk
Our meetings have been a huge success. It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time! Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not. The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs. A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew. Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing. We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group. We also share our samples and ask/answer questions. Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!). Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested. mhendewerk@gmail.com (713) 569-8798
Hoop It Up Bee – Donna Petrick
The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom. We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell. We are open to all levels of users. If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us. Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.
Featherweight Fellowship Groups – Jeanne Vogel
Singer Featherweight sewing machines make happy owners as we sit and sew. We share tips for caring for the machine, our best notions, and have several members experienced with problem-solving both machine and quilting problems. If you work, join us on a Saturday! When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending. Those who have not previously notified me, please email at pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

Membership
By Mary Alice Caffarel
We are almost through another “year” of the Guild. Membership runs from October 1 through September 30 each year. Which means it is time to RENEW again. As of August 1, we will begin accepting registrations and renewals for the 2023-2024 year.
PLEASE NOTE—we will NOT be taking forms and payments on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Preview night. There is just not enough time to check everyone in for the short meeting, handle renewals, and be able to preview the show. We WILL have a staffed membership table on Friday and Saturday during the show.
Remember you can always renew on-line, via the mail, or at the next meeting in September.
Please welcome new member Lucy Wang who recently joined the Guild on-line.
And speaking of new members, SAVE THE DATE: A Sew day for new members who joined this year will be held at Best Little Retreat Center. Located at Coit and Beltline in Richardson, this is a nice venue to meet with friends and sew on whatever project you’d like. You will also learn more about the Guild and meet many of the board members. We have reserved space on Saturday, OCTOBER 7. New members will receive more information via e-mail, along with a link to sign up.
