It’s Show Time! Thank you to all the volunteers who have put in many hours to make this show fabulous! And thank you to the Guild members who entered their quilts! Without the quilts and the volunteers, we don’t have a show!

Our Guild’s August meeting is at the Plano Event Center on Thursday evening. Make sure to check in at the Membership table to get your Member’s Choice ballot!

Social Time: 6:00-6:30 (check out the Mini Quilt Auction!)

Meeting: 6:30-7:00 (Including the introduction of the 2025 slate of officers, and the announcement of the Mayor’s Choice Award and Best of Show Awards)

Show Preview: 7:00-9:00 Open to Guild members and their families, vendors, Seminar attendees, and quilt entrants.

We’ll see you at Quilt Plano 2024! You are welcome to volunteer even if you didn’t sign up. There’s always a place for a helping hand anytime between Tuesday and Saturday! Stop by the Volunteer’s Room to see what’s available and jump in. We’d love to have you!

And one last call for anyone who might want to be part of the QP25 Committee! This year’s show is a great place to shadow and learn the ropes! Please reach out to Laurie Lumston or Carol Truscott to explore the committee openings.

Letter from the President

Letter from the President

And just like that, it’s showtime!! Yes, it’s time to finish sewing on those sleeves and labels!

While I’ve always volunteered at the quilt show every year it has been a fascinating time to see how many facets of putting on a quilt show and how many moving parts it takes to bring it to birth–much like putting all the pieces of a quilt together. Come and spend a couple of hours volunteering at the show. It is so fun to get to know others while working together and make lasting friendships.

And check out our great website!! Thanks to the hard work of Kris O’Connor we have a new home page and lots of our programs going into 2025 are posted. It’s going to be a great time to be a member!!

So, at the show come to the Membership & Programs table to renew your membership, buy a show pin and sign up for the upcoming workshops all together to checkout with one swipe/check or cash payment.

Remember Show Preview hours are earlier–so we have time to see all the quilts (and a few vendors) before the crowd comes on Friday morning!

Dates to remember:

Aug. 6-10 — Quilt Week 2024

Guild Activities

By Chris Fredericks

August has arrived.  It’s typically the lazy day summer month when one sits back, relaxes, picks up a good book, enjoys family time with a picnic or barbeque and perhaps tops it off with a delicious dish of ice cream.  On the flip side, in actuality, August for the Quilters Guild of Plano brings about a rush of excitement and a bit of summer frenzy.  How much fun will we all have at the Quilt Show!  I’m looking forward to my first show and have already signed up to volunteer some time.  I hope you have too!  And when all is said and done – perhaps I’ll enjoy a dish of ice cream while mulling over the wonderful show.

I believe this past year offered members so many opportunities to have fun and to show our creativity.

September will bring about new guild activities and I’m hopeful that we will have another fabulous year!

Enjoy the Quilt Show!

Community Service

By Debbie Blair and Val Schlake

Quilt Show month is upon us and everyone is so excited. It feels like it is going to be a grand event!  This will be my first Plano Quilt Show and I am looking forward to being a part of it and seeing everyone there!

August Sew Day: We want to let everyone know that Community Service will be holding Sew Day August 13th and you are invited. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at Plano Sewing Center from 10am until 2pm and do what we love to do…SEW.  Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies and we will provide the rest.

Grab and Go: We will be accepting Community Service Grab and Go projects during Sew Day.  We have a number of quilts that need binding along with kits to complete. If you can lend a hand, stop by during Sew Day and “grab“ one up to complete.

Thanks for all you do!

Education

By Liz Beaty and Lorrie Gray

Did you miss last month’s demonstration?  It was simple, but helpful, if you ever use white-on-white fabrics. You know it can be difficult to distinguish which side is up when working with these basic backgrounds.  Simply grab a black light and shine it on your fabric.  On the right side, you’ll see a distinct contrast between the fabric and the print.  On the wrong side, there’s no contrast.  If you don’t have a black light, you can find several options on Amazon for just a few dollars.  Search for “black light flashlight.”

Sunshine and Shadows

Did you hear? Evelyn Cheek’s quilt entry is going to be hanging at the Houston International Quilt Show!

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798
