Aug 5-9 — Quilt Week 2025

Sept 11 — Guild Meeting

It’s red hot August–and we are almost ready to hang quilts and have the best Quilt Show in North Texas!  We start quilt week on Tuesday August 5th when we welcome members and non-members to drop off their entries, and start the hanging for the display. Be ready to enjoy seeing the quilts and the ribbon winners on Thursday August 7th after a quick business meeting–announcement of the candidates for the new board at the Plano Event Center.

Oh, and an earlier start for the meeting — social time will begin at 5:45 pm, followed by a brief business meeting at 6:00 pm.

Note: Meeting will not be on zoom–only in person at the Plano Event Center–family welcome.

NO show and tell; NO community service drop-off or pickup that night. Bring them on Tuesday August 12 when we will be sewing at the Plano Sewing Center.

We will be handing out your free name tag to wear while working the show and then for you to wear to the guild meetings. Bonus: we’ll have an extra door prize ticket when you wear the lanyard to the guild meetings!!

– Jeanne

Note: Special items will be available from Pat Fenton’s sewing room for our volunteers to help spread the joy of working together on the Quilt Show.

By the time you read this our Quilt Show will only be days away!!

There are so many fun and exciting activities planned at the show, I can’t wait!!

Laurie Lumston, Quilt Plano 2025 Chair

There are a lot of opportunities for volunteering your talents at the show, even if you didn’t sign up. Just show up and check in at the volunteer table to see where you are needed. We have sit down/no lifting jobs all the way to jobs to get your steps in.

This year’s show features over 250 stunning judged quilts and more than 50 fabulous vendors, all here to spark your imagination and fuel your love of quilting. Be sure to pick up a raffle ticket for our show-stopping quilt, Deco at Dusk, which will be raffled off on Saturday—you won’t want to miss your chance to win this masterpiece!

Visit our Special Exhibits and marvel at the samples from our guild members who participated in small groups and workshops throughout the year. And don’t forget to stop by our Mini Quilt Auction—you can place a silent bid or claim a favorite on the spot with “Buy It Now.” Either way, you’ll be supporting a great cause and going home with something truly special.

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the 37 dedicated guild members who make up this year’s Show Committee and all who are volunteering. Their hard work, creativity, and countless hours bring this event to life.

Proceeds from this show support the Quilters Guild of Plano, helping us host nationally recognized guest speakers, offer educational opportunities, and provide extensive community outreach throughout the year. Our mission is to unite individuals who share a passion for quilts and the art of quilting—and there’s no better place to see that in action than right here at the show.

So take your time, soak in the inspiration, and enjoy everything Quilt Plano has to offer.

Quilts for the California Wildfire Victims

The Texas quilt guild members of Allen, Dallas, McKinney, Plano, Red River Valley, & Waco are the most generous, talented, and giving quilters I have ever met. The donation of another 62 quilts (67 were already sent) are on their way to the Southern California Quilters for distribution to victims of the horrific January wildfires. This collection of all sizes, colors, and themes will be loved.

I can’t express in words how thankful I am to have been able to be part of this process, along with Kathryn Bernstein of the Dallas Guild and Patrice Lambourne of the Camarillo (CA) guild. My heart is full. Thank you, thank you to all that helped make this project such a great success.

Although this quilt gathering is ending, quilts are still definitely needed. If you wish to send a quilt, please contact me and I can give you the name of a person and address to send it to. They will be very pleased to receive quilts, and they make sure they get to them to a wildfire victim quilt event.

GUILD ACTIVITIES

It’s Plano Quilt month! We are all looking forward to an amazing show. Hats are off to the amazing QP2025 committee and all the volunteers who make this show such a wonderful event!

At the June meeting, we kicked off the Mission (Not) Impossible guild activity. We are proud to let everyone know that we have over 50 quilters participating in this activity! WOW!!! This project is being done in conjunction with our Community Service group.  If you missed the chance to pick up a bag of fabric at the June meeting then plan on seeing us at the August meeting to pick up your kit amd start sewing!

We will see everyone at the show!

Chris & Anna Marie

EDUCATION

We had a great time last month sharing some of your tips and tricks that we’ve been collecting.  A few lucky quilters received prizes when their tips were drawn to be read aloud at the meeting.  At the demo table, we shared tips for how to clean and maintain your rotary cut mat.  A list of those tips can be found on the QGPlano website under Resources at https://www.qgplano.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Cutting-Mat-Maintenance.pdf.

Education will be taking a break in August for Quilt Plano Preview Night, but join us back at the education table at September’s meeting.

If you have a demo you would like to present at a guild meeting or have suggestions of demos you would like to see, please let us know.

The Versatile Nine-Patch!

I’m hoping by now that you all know how to sew a Nine-Patch block.  If not, pick up a Nine-Patch kit at our next monthly meeting.  See the instructions on our website, if needed: https://www.qgplano.org/activities/nine-patch/

There are many ways to use a Nine-Patch block in a quilt pattern.  I recently was inspired to do a “Disappearing Nine-Patch” quilt top for a Community Service project.  It was quick and fun!

PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS

Elmer in the House! Gotta admit, I have tried Elmer in the past and not been terribly successful, but after all the tips Sue Heinz gave us during July’s lecture, I think I will re-try a few things. ESPECIALLY THE NIFTY WAY TO EXACTLY LINE UP COOL FABRIC PATTERNS ON BINDINGS WITH BIAS JOINS! That was by far the biggest take-away I have heard members commenting on since the lecture. If you missed it, ask someone who was there. Hopefully everyone interested got the text, Facebook post, and/or email messages about the group order Programs is doing for Sue’s bottle/knitting cap combo. (Order deadline was July 20). For payment and pickup, pop over to the Programs table at the Show or next guild meeting.

Meanwhile, don’t get too sidetracked prepping your Show entry and forget to sign up for our next Workshop in October. Dee Bushrod from Pixel Quilts will be lecturing and teaching us about. . . Pixel Quilts!  Only one workshop (Friday) so don’t wait and miss out on a spot! Not many left! For ease of prep Dee offers a kit so you don’t need to chase down all the different fabrics. If you fall in love with the method, you can even expand the Cherry Blossom Wall Hanging into a larger quilt. See you at the guild meeting!

By the way, did you know quilters are fascinating people?  Join us in September for Conversations with Quilters as we hear backstories from several of our members.  Put names with some faces and learn how they started down the Quilting Rabbit Hole! Enjoy an evening with old friends and maybe make some new ones.

QUILTS OF VALOR

Three quilts were awarded in July, two to women. This young lady, who had a fascinating career driving an aircraft carrier, chose Kaye Dunn’s creation. It was great to see so many quilters (and husbands) at Memorial Park.

Several completed quilts have been turned in recently — they look fabulous! Thank you.

And, thanks to those who turned in blocks for the sampler. We will need more, stay tuned for more info after the Show.
