Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

This last week a friend needed some help after falling and breaking a wrist.  I got to thinking about how much I depend on my quilting buddies for help………maybe sewing advice and design, but lots of time it’s for moral support, for close friendship, for being someone I can count on.  Each year, my quilting friends become more dear to me………..you are my chosen family.  I hope each of you have found that friendship in someone in the guild or your immediate sewing circle. Think about what you would miss if your sewing friends were not in your life.  Do something special for someone in your sewing circle or at the guild.  Be that special friend to someone else today.

And speaking of help, we need to help each other with the new show entry method.  It’s new for us.  There are bound to be hiccups, but remember that we need to make this daunting job easier.  And we need to be working in the current world.  Computers run our lives.  You can either fight it or embrace it, but your life is much easier because of computers.  (Even when we get hacked as I did this last week, again.)  Approach our new process with a sense of adventure and a positive attitude.  Then be sure to read the fine print.

Last year we didn’t receive many quilt entries until we put out a call for quilts at the last moment.  Then we were swamped with entries and nowhere to put them.  This year we are trying to even out the load.  Get your entries in early so as to not incur a late fee and to ensure that we have as beautiful a show as we have had in the past.  I just finished one quilt for the show--except for the label, which will happen soon.  Need to take the picture and go to the website to enter it.

Keep stitching and make a new friend at the next guild meeting.

April Guild Meeting - Thursday, April 13, 2023

Michele Markey

About Medina Domestic Arts Studio

Michele saw her first long arm in 2002 and vowed one day she would have her own long arming business. She got her wish when she retired from the oil and gas industry in 2009 to start her own quilting business AND fabric store.  (Sometimes you should be careful of what you wish for!)  After three years of running both businesses, she sold the fabric business to focus on the long arm offering custom quilting and embroidery, machine rentals, long arm and coloring fabric classes and custom digitizing. For the last 9 years Michele has been teaching classes both to groups and one-on-one in her studio, in quilt shops, quilt guild workshops and in private homes.

Workshop

Fabric Painting 101 - The Elephant

Learn to Use Fabric Markers, Gel Pens, Paints and Inktense Pencils on this 16 Inch Doodled Elephant Block! Even if you don’t sew, if you can color in a coloring book you can color on fabric! Here is the best part of this class: you just show up! Michele will provide a block (for this class it will be a 16 inch block stitched out in black as seen below) and a coloring box full of her tools. You will learn several basic techniques on how to color on fabric as well as how to bling your block (if you so choose). When the class is done you will have a beautiful block to use in a quilt, pillow or on a bag!

Interested in seeing more fabric painting items? Check out www.medinadomarts.com for other blocks and coloring tools.

Workshop

Intermediate Fabric Painting

Several years back while attending the Houston Quilt Show Michele met Sherry Rogers Harrison, another Innova quilter, who completely painted her wholecloth quilts. Intrigued, she took classes from Sherry as well as Linda Poole (another incredibly talented fabric painter). She was hooked! Since then, Michele has developed a niche – painting long arm and embroidery patterns (often redwork or lined designs). As more of her long arm clients saw the end product, they too wanted to learn how to color on fabric. So, she began to teach and developed a series of single and Block of the Month classes that range from beginner to expert as well as various price ranges. Her kits contain all the necessary tools to color each block and there are downloadable instructions as well as YouTube videos to complement each coloring block kit.

May Guild Meeting - Thursday, May 11, 2023

Quilt Show Roll Out and Skill Builder Demos

Bones Table

Come early & come often-–bring your stuff to share.

We encourage everyone to go through their quilting supplies to pull out the extras, the I’m never gonna finish this, the what did I buy this for, the my tastes have changed, the unloved items that no longer bring you joy and bring them to the May Meeting to find someone who would love to have them.

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

How is your show quilt progressing?   Registration is open! The early bird discount to enter your quilt in the show at no cost for guild members  ($15 for non-members) closes at the May 11 guild meeting.  You need a picture of the completed top and the dimensions to enter.  The registration form is online at www.qgplano.org/quilt-entries/.  There will be friendly faces at the April, May and June guild meetings with computers to help you with your entry, if desired.  Just email the picture of your quilt to showregistration@qgplano.org in advance or bring it on a flash drive.  Give some thought to your “Quilter’s Statement” for the sign.  Guild members can enter quilts between the May 11 and the June 8 guild meetings for $20 (or $35 for non-members).

The mini-quilt auction is looking for more minis.  A mini is a quilt no larger than 24” per side.  Please put a sleeve on your mini and bring it to an April or May guild meeting or community service sew day.

The May meeting is the Show Roll-out.  It’s your chance to learn about the many roles behind a quilt show and sign up for those that are for you.  There are literally hundreds of shifts Tuesday – Saturday.  You will also have a chance to buy a lunch for show days, pins, raffle tickets, and show T-shirts—if any are left.  It’s a fun and rewarding way to make new friends, connect with old friends, and give back to the guild.

And, as a preview to what you can see at the Show, we have quite the bonus treat!  Our guild board member Michael Davison has secured a dozen (12!) of Judy Niemeyer’s quilts to show at the May meeting.  To be clear, these are Judy’s quilts, not quilts made from her complex patterns.  This is your chance to see in person her color and fabric choices, plus the first class quilting of award winning quilters.  As a bonus, Michael may let slip a couple of secrets behind these amazing quilts.  Michael’s show booth will offer Quiltworx paper, kits and rulers. Joining Michael is Lorrie Gray, both are training to become certified instructors for Quiltworx.

Plan to attend the May meeting in person!

Quilt Show T-Shirts

By Jeanne Vogel

The show t-shirts have arrived and can be purchased at the April 13th meeting for $20. They are black, with a scooped neckline and short sleeves.

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

It’s time for a super fun class in May! It’s all about Orphan Blocks with MJ Fielek. This class will help you clean your stash of all the leftover blocks, half-square triangles, four-patches, and all the unfinished projects from classes you’ve taken! You can use embroidered linens, old blocks, etc. You will work with value, not color. This is a good quilt to use all those fabrics that you do not like the color. Points don’t matter; if a block does not fit, add a strip or just cut it down in size. When the quilt is finished, quilted and bound, you will then dye it to a color of your choice.

The Leftovers quilt is designed to use all the strips that we cut after each project intending to make a quilt out of them. We just sew all strip sizes together in a unit and slash into sections at angles and add a small strip of color or black and white. This is a great quilt with some strips of novelty fabrics that we buy and never use. Black and white calms the other colors, brings the whole together, and makes a quilt that has a modern feel.

Join MJ Fielek as she guides us through this fun class on Saturday May 6 at Best Little Retreat Center in Texas. Follow this link for more info! https://bestlittleretreatcenterintexas.com/events/orphan-blocks-leftovers-class-with-mj-fielek

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

Thanks to your generosity, in March, we donated 40 quilts and pillowcases, nine baby quilts, seven dog beds and 21 crate liners.

We’re finishing up our house/tree project. Thanks to the members who’ve participated at the Community Sew Days, Quilt Retreat and those picking up kits at the February guild meeting, we have a total of eight quilts to donate – and they’re beautiful!

The next Community Sew Day is Tuesday, April 11 from 10:00 – 2:00 at Plano Sewing Center. It’s a great group of people who come together. Now’s a great time to join since we’re starting on a new quilt project.

Don’t forget to bring your scraps of fabric and batting to the guild meetings next week. We will have dog bed covers available for stuffing.

Finally, are you working on your Birthday Quilt for the 2023 challenge? Each member who donates a completed quilt (including quilting and binding) in celebration of their birthday will be entered into a drawing for a bundle of fat quarters.

Quilts of Valor

By Evelyn Cheek

The mission of the Quilts of Valor® Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing.

QOVF Core Values:

  • Treating people with respect
  • Promoting excellence
  • Valuing service over self
  • Being accountable

 www.QOVF.org

Last month I attended the Guild Meeting by zoom and was so delighted to see the number of quilts, quilt blocks, and quilt labels returned to QOV at the community service table.  I picked them up from Valerie S the following Tuesday at Community Service Day.  Thank you, Val for collecting!

Browse the community service table and have a look at the new 2023 QOV block. The pattern is on the QOV website at www.QOVF.org and is available to print. For some of us it’ll be a welcome challenge. For others, it will be a piece of cake to make a few individual blocks using your own fabric for us to send to the national offices of QOV in South Carolina.  Remember a scant quarter inch is your best friend! Make as many as you’d like throughout the year.  Jeanne Fletcher turned hers in last month and did a beautiful job. Thank you, Jeanne!

Thank you, thank you thank you to the young lady who donated a small basket with a beautiful pieced quilt top to be finished that she’d received from a loved one. And Julie C did a marvelous long arm job on the most recently donated patriotic.  It’s stunning!  Thank you, Julie!

A HUGE shout out to Jeannette G for creating labels on her embroidery machine and donating them to the Guild! They are very fine in the making and are ready to attach to our donated quilts.  Thank you so much Jeannette! We’re ready for 6 more as you find time to donate again.

As you browse the Community Service table (where QOV is located) you may be interested in picking up a Patriotic Quilt Bag to finish. There’s binding, quilting, labels, etc. to be completed for each quilt to be ready to wrap around a deserving veteran later this year. Below is a list of jobs to be done.  Plano quilters are sooooooo generous with their time and talents and we see the fruits of our labor each time someone offers to make a donation.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Feel free to meet me at the table!

This month we have available quilt bags that need:

  • 1 backing and quilting
  • 2 that need binding attached
  • 1 that needs binding and label attached
  • 6 that need labels attached

Happy Quilting!

The name of our game is friendship and fellowship around our virtual quilting circle. Pieceful Organization - Sarah Krauss & Jeanne Vogel   (Now we meet twice a month!)

If you are feeling “abode overload," we will:  relieve clutter, stress, struggle and feelings of being overwhelmed.  We are Zooming on the 3rd and the 4th Wednesday's from 1:30-3:30 pm using the inspiration from a workshop we attended.  Organization will change your clutter and chaos to start the day fresh with your stuff organized.  Less chaos leads to more productive quilt making.  Please contact pickincotton26@verizon.net for an invitation.

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Our meetings have been a huge success.  It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs.  A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We also share our samples and ask/answer questions.  Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798

We meet the first Monday of each month at 10:00 on Zoom.  If you are interested in joining our hand applique Zoom group, please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

English Paper Piecing Small Group - Linda Neal

We meet on the third Tuesday at 10:00 on Zoom.  Whether you are new to English Paper Piecing or a pro, we would love to have you join our group.   Our group is informal and fun!!  For a link,  please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

Hoop It Up Bee Donna Petrick

The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom.  We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell.  We are open to all levels of users.  If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us.  Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.

Featherweight Fellowship Groups - Jeanne Vogel

Singer Featherweight sewing machines  make happy owners as we sit and sew. We share tips for caring for the machine, our best notions, and have several members experienced with problem-solving both machine and quilting problems. If you work, join us on a Saturday!  When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending.  Those who have not previously notified me, please email at pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

Keep ‘em coming! Thanks to all who have already turned in 9 patch blocks. The colored pieces should read as a solid, and the light pieces should be white or very light cream/beige color. Directions are available on the web site under Activities/ Nine Patch. You may drop them off at the Membership table at each meeting. This is a good way to use up scraps, especially those in short supply.

It was good to see so many of you with NAMETAGS at the March meeting. Keep it in your purse or car so you’ll have it every month.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

It’s a fun time to belong to a quilt guild.  I hope you are taking advantage of the activities we have for you.  First off, our programs and workshops are top rated.  We have opportunities for you to expand your quilt knowledge, enjoy activities with fun people and find out what is going on with the rest of the area quilters.

Next, and I hope this reaches you before show time, it’s time for the Dallas Quilt Show.  That is always a fun excursion—seeing quilts from a number of nationally known quilters as well as quilts from very talented local people.  (Dallas has a full house of vendors.  So get your credit cards ready.)

Then we have guild activities set up for you to enjoy—sewing for others with the community organizations that we help support…helping to set up a new educational department…joining with others on various Zoom calls to learn new techniques…getting together for the guild retreat.  And maybe best of all—a chance to see how to best put on our own quilt show.  We have a very good reputation in the area of a well-run show.  See how you can be part of that show.

In the near future we will start looking for a new slate of officers.  It’s time for several of us to rotate off the board.  If you are interested in being an officer and helping to lead the guild in the future, please contact me and let’s talk about the opportunity.  Soon, I’ll let you know what positions are open.  Get involved.  Be part of the growth and development of this wonderful group of talented people.

Happy Stitching!

Mary Kerr

Mary Kerr is an award-winning quilter, teacher, speaker, author, and appraiser. She has been a professional in the quilt and fiber arts industry for over thirty years and brings her depth of knowledge and joy to the quilting community.

Mary says: I love all things old and cherished, not only in quilts but in all aspects of life; a deep faith, family relationships, life-long friends, old papers, and the stories of our past.  I love sharing these with the current generations and keeping the past alive.

I have a passion for merging the vintage with modern to create pieces that will be cherished by all generations and bring our history out of the past. My current work marries my love of the vintage with the freedom to create in the way that makes the artist's heart sing. I get my energy by taking pieces and scraps from yesterday and making them into new works of art. Each compilation quilt honors those who came before us and celebrates all that we are able to do and be today.

The south has a rich quilting history, steeped in tradition and passed down through the generations. Join Mary Kerr as she shares some of the glorious designs, colors and patterns that are unique to that region.

Mary worked with 13 quilt historians, and they are thrilled to share quilts from 17 Southern institutions and more than 50 private collectors. Enjoy these uniquely Southern patterns and styles. Celebrate the history and those who have shared their time and talent.

It’s going to be a great time to keep decluttering your room/closet/bin/stash to pass on any unwanted or unused quilting items from your home. We will have a Bones Table at the May 11th meeting. All items will be up for grabs, so come early and frequently as new items will be arriving. All the remaining items will be donated to guild member Lut de Meulder to take to those in need in North Carolina.

Plano Quilt Guild Retreat

By Jeanne Vogel

The annual Quilters Guild of Plano’s retreat was held Thursday, Feb 16 – Sunday the 19th at the Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma.  Those 4 days and 3 nights were full of sewing, laughter, games, catching up with old friends, and making new friends.   From the initial feedback – the 54 members who attended had a wonderful time.  Some “left over quilts” from last year’s retreat were completed and many new quilt tops were started and completed during the week-end.  What a productive group!  Look for pictures on the website.

There were opportunities to visit the 8th floor of the Whiskey Tower to see a beautiful view of Lake Texoma.  Sunsets from the 8th floor are spectacular and there was an opportunity one night to participate in karaoke in the bar.  It was quite a happening.   My great thanks to the other members of the committee that made it a success: Jeanne Fletcher, Diana Florence, Sara Lindsay and Linda Sullivan.

One item was left behind. If you can name it, you can claim it.

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

The publicity effort is launched.  Raffle tickets are selling.  Remember guild members are encouraged to sell $20 worth of tickets (24 tickets).  Pick up yours at the next meeting.  The mini-quilt auction needs more minis!

In 2022, we sold show admission tickets online for the first time.  It was a big step for the Plano Guild, which was well received by our guests, and we jumped over the hurdles without any crashes.  This year, we are taking a bigger leap forward with online entry registration.  Many of you mastered the process for the Dallas Show.  Watch for our registration link to “go live” mid-March.  If you aren’t computer confident, no worries.  Before the Guild April and June meetings, we will help you with the registration between 5:30 and 6:30 pm.  At the May meeting, we will help you from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.  No appointment needed.  Just email a jpg file picture of your quilt to showchair@qgplano.org before you leave home.  Remember to bring the quilt dimensions.

As part of an online entry registration, the mailing is being discontinued, along with the $1 mailing fee.  Watch for an email in late June/early July with instructions on when to drop off and pick up your quilt(s).

Another new process in 2023 is that we are encouraging early registration.  There is no entry fee for member entries received by 9 pm on Thursday, May 11 (the guild meeting date).  The entry fee for non-members is $15.  (The entry registration will close from 9 pm to midnight on May 11, 2023.)  Between May 12 and June 8 (the next guild meeting date) the entry fee increases $20, or $20 for members and $35 for non-members.  Entry registration closes at midnight June 8, 2023.  As before, your quilt does not have to be finished at entry, just a picture-ready top completed.

Why all the changes?  To make the show run as smooth as clockwork, without abusing our volunteers.  A whole lot of work happens between the close of registration and the opening of the show.  The registration team checks all the entries, prints the layout books, and sends the quilters personalized confirmations with drop off/pick-up details.  The layout of the quilts is determined.  If we have any extra space, the vendors on the waitlist need enough time to gather inventory and make arrangements.  Ribbons get ordered.  The set-up team puts together the jigsaw puzzle of what rod combination to use with each quilt.  The entries, vendors, and mini quilt donors are added to the program, which is proofed, re-proofed, and sent to the printer.  And those are just some of the tasks based on entry registration.

We can’t wait to see the beautiful quilts you are making!  Keep quilting.

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

What is a Cuddle?

A Cuddle is a small one piece, layered “quilt” given to a small child to hold for comfort. They are the size of a Fat Quarter with minimal quilting, preferably made with flannel or other soft fabric on one side. The Guild provides Cuddles to pediatric clinics and hospitals.  How can YOU help with Cuddles? The Community Service team could use donations of good quality flannel to make kits for Cuddles. A great time to de-stash all that left-over flannel from those baby quilts you used to make. The minimum usable size is a Fat Quarter and only solids or prints appropriate for babies or children please.

Are you working on your Birthday Quilt for the 2023 Challenge? Each member who donates a completed quilt (including quilting and binding) in celebration of their birthday will be entered into a drawing for a bundle of fat quarters.

Join us for Community Service Sew Day on March 14th at Plano Sewing Center. Our group is growing! It’s not only a great way to give back to the Community, but to make new friends and learn new skills. Last month, we demonstrated (and did) Foundation Paper Piecing, and in March, Donna Petrick will demo Machine Binding.

Quilts of Valor

By Evelyn Cheek

The mission of the Quilts of Valor® Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing.

QOVF Core Values:

  • Treating people with respect
  • Promoting excellence
  • Valuing service over self
  • Being accountable

Quilts awarded across the Nation:

  • 2021: 30,428
  • 2022: 30,978
  • 2023: 2,082
  • Total: 338,143 (from date of first recorded award in 2012 through 28 JANUARY 2023)

At our last meeting we had two patriotic quilt tops and backing  picked up by generous ladies to be quilted and returned for binding and label to be added.  We had one returned for binding to be added and it is beautiful! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to those who have donated their time, talents, and long arms –Sally F, Julie C, Monica, and Peggy C.  Thank you to Dian C and Melinda who dropped off a bag of goodies to use for QOV as well.  And a HUGE thank you to Jannett G for volunteering to make more QOV labels for us.  We have a half dozen quilts that are ready to be picked up and need just the label attached. (Thank you as well to the person who donated behind the scenes and I didn't get your name!)

We’re so grateful for your time you put in!

Browse the community service table and have a look at the new 2023 QOV block. The pattern is on the QOV website at www.QOVF.org and is available to print. For some of us it’ll be a welcomed challenge. For others it will be a piece of cake to make a few individual blocks using your own fabric for us to send to the national offices of QOV in South Carolina.  Remember a scant quarter inch is your best friend! Several quilt tops have been turned into QOV and we’ve also graciously received quilts that are completely finished and meet the QOVF.org requirements. Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

Our Guild just keeps growing and growing!  I attribute that to several factors.

  • Our programs, speakers and workshops are excellent and interesting.
  • Our large membership means any single person can find multiple people in the guild with similar tastes and interests, and all seem willing to share knowledge and how-to-do-that information.
  • Lots of strong friendships start here.

So if you’re relatively new, get involved. You can’t help but grow in your quilting endeavors.

Also--many of you have realized I am not that great at keeping a name matched with the face to which it belongs.  Remember to wear a NAMETAG, with letters large enough to read.  It can be simple or you can make a fancy one. Keep it in your purse, or maybe your car, and you’ll have it every time you come to a meeting.  With over 300 members, I’m sure others will benefit from this as well.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

Haven’t we had some great programs?  After this last one—have you worked on decluttering your sewing space?  I keep trying to make my room larger but the walls just stay where they are.  So I’ve had to change what’s in the room.  I’m making progress in clearing out things I don’t need as I’m sewing at the moment.  It’s a work in progress just in that aspect.  But I’m working on it.

Thanks to Frances Hafer and Tisha Harms and the rest of the programs committee for all the hard work getting these programs lined up.

We have some fun things lined up for the guild this year.  Make sure you read the newsletter, or check the website, or check on social media.  Start gathering your orphan blocks.  Information will come soon.

We do need some people to come forward to help with education.  In the past we worked several city events to showcase the guild.  With Covid a lot of those activities have gone by the wayside.  Also, because of Covid, we haven’t been able to teach quilting to young people.  Now we are needing to restart our efforts.  What can we do to help people learn about the guild and enjoy our craft along with us?  Liz Beaty is the VP of Education and is needing a committee to set new guidelines.  Please contact Liz or me if you are interested in this area.

February Guild Meeting - Thursday, February 9, 2023

Vicki Conley

My love for art began as a youngster. I explored papier-mâché, macramé, pastels, painting, stitchery and whatever else I could do with my hands. Art education seemed the route I would pursue until the ninth grade when an exceptional science teacher opened my eyes and heart to another direction. For the next eleven years I followed the dream of science to a Masters of Science degree in Physiology and subsequently worked in medical research. When my husband and I started our family, I quit work and enrolled in a pottery class. What began as a hobby grew steadily into a full time business. I established Pinon Pottery in 1982 with a home studio and in 2000 opened my studio/gallery, Pinon Pottery.

It has been the best career possible, allowing me to be an at-home mom who could be involved with scouts, home schooling, church and sport activities for our two girls, while at the same time developing a business doing what I love - throwing pots.  My pottery is primarily functional, reduction stoneware that is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. A mat blue glaze with a hand painted flower design has been a very successful pattern for many years, but my most popular pattern has a soft airbrushed, blue and white background with hummingbirds. Among fifty or so functional items are some unique pieces including a French butter crock, an egg separator, and microwave bacon cookers.

In 2003 I discovered quilting – beginning with foundation pieced wall hangings.  After making a few traditional quilts, I started designing my own quilts and art quilts. I enjoy learning new techniques and using them to develop a quilt.  My inspiration is taken from the natural world and I enjoy interpreting it both realistically and abstract.

I have recently retired from 40 years as a studio potter. I still own the gallery in Ruidoso Downs where I sell my work. I've been a fiber artist for about 20 years and am now also exploring surface pattern design. My work is strongly influenced by hiking and traveling through our national and state parks. My husband and I now travel extensively in our RV with our three dogs always looking for the next inspiration.

Pinon Pottery Studio and Gallery is located 3 miles east of the Wal-Mart stoplight on Hwy. 70, Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.

Workshop

Vicki Conley:  From Photo to Imagination

You will learn how to simplify and combine photos into a graphic design both the old-fashioned way with tracing paper and with apps on the IPad. You will learn my turned edge machine piecing technique using Floriani Stitch n Wash stabilizer. Cutting apart the stabilizer to use as templates you will see how easy it is to turn the edges with glue stick.  It is left in the finished piece giving nice body to the art quilt. You will also learn my fussy piecing technique using a gradation fabric. You can construct either a landscape or an animal. Bring plenty of photos.

Time:  Thursday, February 10-11, 2023, 9:00am – 4:00pm (1-hour lunch)
Location:  Best Little Retreat Center in Texas
7989 Beltline Road #168, Dallas, TX  75248
Workshop Fee:  $90.00  ($45.00/day)

March Guild Meeting - Thursday, March 9, 2023

Plano Quilt Guild Retreat

By Jeanne Vogel

Happy to announce that the 2023 Plano Retreat at Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma is just a few weeks away. Starting Thursday Feb. 16 at 10am - until Sunday afternoon at 3pm on Feb. 19. Four days of time away, sewing, visiting, eating and sleeping at a resort about an hour’s drive away. A Bones Table of your fabric, notions, etc. that you are ready to pass along, a sale of your priced items, and stretching exercises are in the plans. A little time to make blocks for community service leaves lots of time to work on your unfinished projects. Bring your projects, sewing machine, thread, and have a great four day getaway with friends you have and a chance to make more friends! Just dreaming about days with no meal planning, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. and being pampered and productive sewing.

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

The cornerstone pieces of the show puzzle are in place!  The judges and many vendors are secured.  We just need quilts and volunteers (plus a million little things).

Feb 20 – 22, 2023.  The mini-quilt gurus have made an offer too good to refuse.  Kaye Dunn is offering her expertise, patterns, and books, creative juices, and insight as to what sells all for the good of the guild.  She will be at the Best Little Retreat Center on Feb 20, 21, and 22 from 9 am to 2 pm.  No charge or appointment needed.  Drop in and consult with Kay if you are stuck; or wonder if your quilt could be just a little better.  Take advantage of this generous offer!

The judged show registration will open in March.  Deadline is June 9.  Now is the time to create and construct your top.

Quilt angels play a critical role in helping show attendees and keeping the displayed quilts clean and safe.  One observation from last year was we needed more quilt angels.  They get to wear a precious apron!  We need a head angel—someone to recruit more volunteers—think girl scouts, neighborhood association, church group—and coordinate positioning during the show.  Optimally, this is a role for co-chairs to share the duties; we’d love to have two volunteers.

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

We need you! Community Service needs one dedicated, caring person to assist us with the coordination and delivery of dog beds to local animal shelters. If you are interested, please reach out to Bonnie Cook at 214-632-5853 or email at bcook111698@gmail.com. The time commitment is an average of two hours per month.  We’ve got several beds ready to go and just need someone to coordinate.

The Quilts of Valor Mission: To cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing

At our last meeting we had four patriotic quilt tops and backing  picked up by generous ladies to be quilted and returned for binding and label to be added.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to those who have donated their time, talents, and long arms – Julie C, Pam, Carolyn C, Evelyn C, Diane C, and an anonymous donor.  (As well as the person who donated behind the scenes and I didnt get your name!)

Sometimes our machine is in working order and sometimes it’s in the ‘hospital’ for months. Diane C (Thank you Diane!) has made numerous quilt labels for us and her machine is on a break right now. Would you be willing to make a few?  (Up to six are needed at this time.)  We’d like to have a dozen on hand. TEXT me with your name at 214.415.4496 and I’d be glad to answer your questions. See label pic.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

Our membership keeps growing, as we are up to 306 members as of January 23. Please welcome any newcomers and reach out to others you may not know as well. Friendships are what make our guild so enjoyable.

We still are in need of Nine-patch blocks. Directions can be found on the website under  ACTIVITIES/ NinePatch. And you don’t even need your password to get there. Note that the colors do need to read as a solid from a distance. You can bring completed blocks to the Membership table during any monthly meeting.

Please take advantage of the small groups that we currently have meeting. Many are on Zoom and open. Just email the contact person so they can forward you meeting time information and links, if needed.  Because we have a number of newer members that are interested in small groups, we will concentrate some efforts on possibly setting up new groups later this spring.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

I get to say “Happy New Year” again because now it’s the calendar new year instead of our fiscal year.  I hope you had a wonderful holiday season.  I know it’s very cold as I’m writing this, but by the time you read it we should be back with our normal winter Texas temperatures.  Have you made new year’s resolutions?  Did it include spending time with material and a sewing machine?  Or spending time with your quilting friends?  My wish is that you will be spending time doing some projects with the guild too.

Hopefully, you are well on your way with your quilt entry for our show.  If not, you still have time.  We always have such a beautiful selection of quilts.  I don’t know how it’s always better, but it’s such a delight to see the talent displayed by our members and friends.

I’m looking forward to the great programs and workshops that our program group has lined up for us.  There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to provide us with such a wonderful opportunity to know what is going on in the quilting business.  I’m sure that is a big reason for our increased membership numbers.  Where else can you get such an education in what is happening in the quilt world?

It's time to think about our other educational goals also.  Due to all of the covid variations for the past three years, we have not been able to do as much in the community with teaching or displaying our talented member’s work.  Yes, community service sew days and workshops “teach”, but our charter is as an education based organization.  Liz Beaty would like for several people to help her with developing our education agenda.  If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact Liz or me.  Let’s get back to giving more to our community.

Happy New Year.  Happy Stitching.

Love Where you Create: It’s not a One Size Fits All Solution

Are you unhappy with your studio space because there isn’t room to work? Are you overwhelmed by all the stuff that seems to be taking over but don’t know how to bring back order? If your current situation isn’t functioning for you -- it might be time to hit the refresh button.

You will also learn:

  • A three-day kick start method for clearing out and bringing back much needed breathing room.
  • How to save time with designated workstations, storage and labels.
  • How to maximize your allowable space with clever real studio ideas.
  • Easy, fun and budget friendly ways to create a space that reflects your individual personality, needs and where you are right now.

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

With the arrival of 2023, the Quilt Show is gearing up!   The dates are firm:  August 11 and 12, 2023.  Thursday, June 8 is the deadline to enter your quilt(s).

The initial committee meeting is Monday, January 16th at 7 pm via Zoom.   We have three open committee positions–quilt angel coordinator, signs, and a Plano area vendor assistant to deliver/pick-up as needed.   Call me if you would like more information.  469-387-0033.

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

Can I just say WOW? I am honored to be part of such a caring Guild. December was a busy month. We handed out 64 quilts to be bound, 9 to be long-armed and 40 pillowcase kits. We RECEIVED 21 tops, 41 completed, 6 backed and quilted and 36 pillowcases. We were wonderful holiday elves.

In November, we delivered 10 quilts & pillowcases to the Samaritan Inn,  24 cuddles and 18 quilts and pillowcases to Children’s Medical Center of Plano and 22 dog beds to the Richardson Animal Shelter. Isn’t it fabulous we can share our creativity with so many? But, you know what that means  - now we need more quilts.  You’ve got your chance to participate during our Tuesday Sew Days. We have so much fun - it’s a party!  (pictures attached) - See what fun we have!)

In January and February, we will be making the “Little House” quilts again (see picture). This Community Service quilt has been a favorite of members in the past. We will work on it at our Tuesday Sew Days (January 10th and February 14th ). We will also have a limited number of kits (each to make 6 house blocks) at the January Guild Meeting. For those of you interested in foundation paper piecing, there will be kits with the 6 pieces required to make the tree blocks. In order to complete the tops, we ask that all completed blocks be turned in no later than the March Guild Meeting. As a timesaver, all the roofs (flying geese) are already completed in the kits.

We will have a “Birthday Quilt” Challenge again in 2023. Each member who donates a completed quilt (including quilting and binding) in celebration of their birthday will be entered into a drawing for a special door prize. The quilt should come from your stash and can be turned in at the Community Service table at a guild meeting any time during the year. One entry per member; be sure you specify that the quilt is for the “Birthday Quilt Challenge” so you will be given a ticket. If you wish, you may indicate to which of our supported charities that you would like the quilt to be given. The drawing will be held at the December 2023 Guild Meeting (it is not necessary to be at that particular meeting to win.)

Would you like to be a part of our wonderful committee? We’re looking for someone to be in charge of our dog beds. It’s an easy job and you’ll love being part of our group. Who wouldn’t want to distribute dog beds to deserving organizations in Plano? If you’re interested, please let me know.

Finally, I want to thank the members of the Community Service Committee;  Valerie Schlake, Laurie Lumston, Evelyn Cheek, Barbara Pepin and Pam Walsh. These dedicated women have made our world a better place. I can’t thank them enough.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

Renewals have been coming in.  As I write this on Dec. 21, we have 281 active memberships for this year.

Anyone can get on our website and see information about joining, activities, programs, and general information. However, ONLY paid members can access the membership directory.  This requires your user name and password.

Username:

  • If we entered you into the membership database, it will most often be your first initial followed by your full last name.  Sometimes that doesn’t work.  Ex:  MJones.  We have 3 people with that first initial and last name. So theirs have been modified and they should know what they are.
  • If you entered yourself by joining online, you created your own username.
  • If you need to verify your username, please see me at the January meeting. I’ll have a list and my computer to look anyone up that needs help. Or you can email membership@qgplano.org and I’ll respond within a day or two.
  • You can also use your email address as your username.

Password:

  • When you originally signed up, you should have received an email with your user name and a Temporary password.  Upon signing into the website you should have changed your password.

We have had a good number of new members say they never got that email. Therefore, we are sending out a new email to anyone who has joined since October 2021.

  1. IF you already have a password and can access the member directory, you can disregard this email.
  2. IF you need a password, please use the temporary password, sign in, and then CHANGE to a password of your choice.

If you had a password, but cannot remember it,  please send a message to webmaster@qgplano.org. This will trigger several automatic emails ( be sure to check your junk folder).

  1. The first will let you know that someone has requested to change your password. You must reply to this email indicating that you do want to do that.
  2. The second email will give you a temporary password. When you sign into the website with that, you must CHANGE to a password of your choosing. This is done under your MEMBER PROFILE.
  3. The third email will send you confirmation that the password has been changed ( but it will not tell you what it was changed to, so be sure to keep it where you can find it) . It will tell you your user name.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

By the time you are reading this, we are past Thanksgiving and well into the Holiday planning stages.  However, it’s Thanksgiving evening when I’m finally writing my article for this month.  So I want to tell you some of the things I’m so thankful for.  Of course, God and family first.  But next and dear to my heart are the members of the Quilters Guild of Plano.  I’m so thankful that many years ago I took a class from Bev Carlsen-Landy at the Plano Rec Center and learned to quilt.  She and I became friends and she led me to the Allen Quilt Guild, then QGP and then to Quilters Guild of Dallas.  What a journey it has been.

I’ve been active in all the guilds at different times and then settled into QGP as my home guild.  I’m thankful for all the friendships I’ve made over the years.  Thankful for all the quilting skills and life skills I’ve learned from so many of you.  Thankful for the chance to pass on some of the skills I’ve learned to others of you.  And, hopefully, we are not yet done.

As we get into the Holiday season and spirit, remember that our December meeting is our Holiday party.  The board members will supply snacks, the guild will buy soft drinks and water.  If you have a special snack you would like to share, please bring it.  We will get a chance to talk to each other and get to know each other better.  Please plan to attend.

Michael Davison will unveil the challenge blocks and handle the block swap.   We are also looking into some different challenges for this next year.  If you have suggestions you can bring that to our attention that night.  You might even get a chance to help with a challenge if you choose.

Happy Stitching.  Enjoy the holidays!!

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

If you think the world is full of procrastinators and unfinished projects, WRONG! It was very exciting to see the mini-quilts turned in at the November guild meeting, over six months before the deadline.  That said, we still need a few dozen more.

We are keeping fingers crossed that we will have raffle tickets for purchase at the December Guild meeting.  The Powerball lottery has been won recently; you might as well go with raffle tickets for stocking stuffers. It’s truly a lovely quilt!

The first Show Committee meeting will be via Zoom on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 7 pm.  The committee slots described in the October newsletter are, unfortunately, still open.  The really hard, time consuming, and potentially stressful jobs have all been snagged.  Call me and I’ll fill you in on this easy, fun way to contribute to the Guild.  No prior experience or educational requirements.  Carolyn @ 469-387-0033

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

Thanks to the marvelous community service committee, we’re rolling right along, and we plan to deliver quilts completed by the Guild in the last three months to those in need. Everyone should be very proud of our work in giving others warmth and a metaphorical hug because of the time we spend with needle, thread, and fabric. I’ll share photos in next month’s newsletter.

If you’ve missed the opportunity to attend one of our Sit and Sews, you’re missing out. We sew on the second Tuesday of each month. The next Sit and Sew is December 13 at The Plano Sewing Center. We sew from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. An added benefit to attending is the number of friends you’ll make along the way. I promise you’ll find a delightful group of people who share the same passion for quilting as you do. I know anytime I’ve attended anything sponsored by the Guild, I leave blessed to have made a new friend.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving this year.  The holidays will be here in no time. My granddaughter (age 5) has a dance recital mid-December, and she will be in the Nutcracker for the first time. Probably not dancing much–-I wouldn’t be surprised to see her as a stationary present under the tree! Her class has a lot of energy, but hasn't quite picked up the skills yet. And the stagefright….with the frozen deer in the headlights look from some of them. It is cute.

Our guild sometimes loses members who move out of the area.  Our tradition is to provide 100  9-patch blocks for the member to assemble into a quilt.

  • Please make a 9 patch block  and bring it to any meeting. We will have a basket at the membership table for you to drop them into. Directions can be found on the website under Activities/Nine Patch.
  • Bright colors and batiks would be good fabric choices for the 5 squares. They should read almost as a solid.  White, cream or near whites should be used for the other 4 squares.
  • Each of the 9 squares of fabric will be cut to 2½”. The Block should finish at   6½” with the seam allowances as you turn it in.

We currently have 238 active members.  Those who have not yet renewed should do so ASAP.  All memberships from 2021-2022 will run out of grace period at the end of the year.

Dues are currently $30.00 for an individual, and you can add any family members living in the same household for an additional $10.00 each. Please note that membership fees will go up to $35 per individual on January 1, so get your renewals in before the end of the year. Family membership will remain $10.00.

Print off the membership form and mail it in with your check, or renew on-line. For on-line renewals, please be aware that a Paypal account will be set up when you pay.  You can also bring the form and your check to the December meeting.

I’m looking forward to another great year with the Quilters Guild of Plano. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
