LETTER FROM GUILD PRESIDENT – Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

Dates to mark on your new 2025 calendar:

Feb. 11 & Mar 11–Community Service Sew Days

Feb. 13 & Mar 13–Guild Meetings

Feb. 14–Featherweight Maintenance Class

Feb. 20-23—Annual Guild Retreat at Tanglewood

The purpose of the Quilters Guild of Plano is to unite individuals who have a passion for quilts and the art of quilting.

Well, to those new to the state of Texas, we just had our first cold winter weather and had to skip the January meeting! The January speaker/programs are making plans to return another month.

Make sure you stop by each of the tables after checking in at Membership — buy a pin, register for a workshop, turn in your mini-quilt, buy your raffle tickets, turn in/pick up in your community service, see the activities, see the demo, see the visiting guild’s raffle quilt from the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas.

Bring your love home some chances for winning the raffle quilt. $20 and it could be yours!

We would really LOVE to know you, so please plan to wear a name tag to the meeting so we can recognize you. The guild is planning to purchase name tags with our guild logo to help in this process. You can add your name printed on a paper or embroider it and insert it into the plastic pocket. Let us know if you are interested.

You will be falling in LOVE with the new website. Come to learn some of the ways to navigate our new website.

Special Thanks!

California Fire Help

The wildfires in California over the last 3 months have been devastating! So many people have been affected. The Camarillo Quilters Association (my former guild) is collecting and distributing new quilts to families who lost their homes in the Mountain Fire, which started in Somis, California, and was pushed through parts of Camarillo and Santa Paula on November 6th and 7th  by strong Santa Ana winds. These families are invited to “pop-up distribution sites” where each member of the family gets to choose the size and colors of the quilt they want.

I am reaching out to members of our guild to ask if you have a quilt you might contribute. I will collect quilts until May and then, ensure they are delivered to CQA for distribution.

The most popular size is “lap size,” which gives makers a lot of leeway for sizing. Bed-sized quilts are appreciated as well as children/teen quilts.

It takes several months for many families to settle into a form of permanent housing after the initial weeks in motels, RVs, and bunking in with family members. Once settled a bit, people are more emotionally prepared to come forward to choose a quilt. This spring is the ideal time for us to offer these families the comfort of new quilts for each family member. These distribution events are very emotional for the quilters as well as the families who lost everything. We hug, hold hands, and listen. And shed tears as they share stories.

Camarillo Quilters appreciates the help from sister guilds to provide these quilts to our friends and neighbors who are building their lives anew.

I am sure the need will expand as other fire areas begin the process of dealing with the loss. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and quilts of comfort.

Hurricane Helene Help

Thank you to Janet Carver. Her daughter Sara is the Associate Head Coach for the Auburn University Women’s Gymnastics team.  One of her gymnasts is from Asheville, NC. Sara’s family picked up 2 boxes of donated quilts from our Guild storage over the holidays and delivered them to her gymnast and her parents.

We also gave the quilts to a ministry called Swannanoa Valley Christian that serves the Swannanoa Valley, one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Helene. Here is a bit about their mission and ministry  headquartered in Black Mountain: Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry (SVCM) is a team of committed staff, volunteers, churches, and community partners working together to provide essential support and compassionate service to our neighbors in the Swannanoa Valley. Whether it’s housing, food, clothing, or direct financial assistance for things like rent, heating, transportation, and utilities, our goal in every interaction is to affirm every individual’s inherent dignity and worthy regardless of their social or economic background.

At the February meeting I would love to present the “Lone Star Award” to one of our members.  This was started in 2000 to give recognition to members that demonstrate their willingness through volunteerism, going above and beyond in promoting our Guild and helping the Quilters Guild of Plano to achieve its objectives. Pat Wiant is certainly deserving of this award.  Pat often travels and is not in town to attend the meetings but has found a way to honor the members of the guild. She sends out sympathy and get-well cards to members we learn that have struggles in their lives. She has done this for numerous years and is so deserving of being recognized as a “star” in our eyes.

Congratulations and will present you with the Lone Star pin at the next meeting. She always attends the annual retreat and is a delight to have in our guild. She has been a long standing member of the guild as well as the Wednesday Girls small group. Congrats to you Pat.

EDUCATION

We want to hear from you! What are some demos you would like to see or are there any demos you would like to present? Please submit this Google form, or talk to us during social time at the Education table.

Let’s all learn some new tips, tricks and techniques together in the new year!

We adjusted our demo schedule since we had inclement weather in January.

Coming up in February, stop by and check out the guild’s new website and how to navigate the site.

At the March meeting we are talking all about scraps! How to prep, organize and actually use your scraps.

GUILD ACTIVITIES

Didn’t we all miss the January meeting?  We sure did!

Please plan on stopping by the Activities table as we introduce a few new activities for everyone to enjoy!  We’re looking into another Mystery Quilt Challenge and perhaps another Fat Quarter Lotto.

We’re also trying to think up another “Make It and Share It” activity – similar to last year’s Pot Holder Exchange or the recent Holiday Exchange.

Please let us know if you have any ideas that might work for an exchange activity.  All ideas are welcome!

Anna Marie Larrabee

COMMUNITY SERVICE

February will be our first meeting in 2025 and we are excited to get this year kicked off in full swing!  With so many in need of a little kindness in our own community and those that lost everything in the wake of Hurricane Helene and now the horrific California fires… We have so many in need of our prayers and our “quilts.”  We all know, when you wrap up in a quilt, life just gets better.

Community Service Sew Day We meet the second Tuesday of February at the Plano Sewing Center from 10 until 2. We invite you to join us!   All you need to bring is your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies and we will provide the rest.

Grab and Go Projects    Perfect if you are unable to participate in person.  Grab and go can be finished at home on your schedule. We appreciate any help you can provide. Plus, it is a great feeling to be able to be part sharing a little kindness with those in need in our community.  All the Grab and Go’s can be picked up during the quilt meeting or at the CS sewing day.

  • Quilts to be quilted
  • Quilts to be bound
  • Quilt tops to be completed
  • Cuddle kits
  • Pillowcase Kit

Note:  Please try to complete and return any projects you already have so we can keep the quilts flowing in order to get them to those that need them most.

Thanks to all — Our “Plano Guild Members” always rise to the challenge and we thank you for all you do!

Alex Andersen: Living the Quilty Life

Well darn. 🙁  We were really looking forward to getting some batting education at our January meeting from Sherry Mark of Loft Supply.  Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans. Sherry was disappointed, too, but happy to not risk a drive from Houston on those icy days.  We have been able to re-schedule her to January 2026, so YAY!

Hopefully February weather cooperates so we can hear from Featherweight Guru Nova Montgomery about why everyone loves those little machines so much. Even if you don’t have one, it should be interesting to learn something about these beautiful pieces of history.

The Featherweight Maintenance workshop on February 14 is now full, but we do have a waiting list in case of last minute cancellations. Nova’s current schedule does not allow us to add a Saturday workshop in February.  If she is able to accommodate us later in the year we will let you know.

Lastly, YES!  Alex Andersen from The Quilt Show fame will be Zooming in to tell us about “Living the Quilty Life” for our March Program.  See you at Guild Meeting!

QUILT PLANO 2025

We’re looking for a few good volunteers! If you’re interested in learning more about the logistics of a successful quilt show, we’ve got a place for you! Come join our committee and shadow one of our team leads. Do you have a creative flair? Do you enjoy the details of spreadsheets? Either way, we’d love to have you join us! Reach out to Laurie (laurie.lumston@gmail.com) or Carol (caroltruscott80@gmail.com) to find your place.

We’re also looking for vendors and sponsors to participate in Quilt Plano 2025. If you know of a quilting vendor that would be a great fit, please encourage them to visit our vendor https://www.qgplano.org/quilt-show/quilt-plano-vendors/ website to learn more! Booth space will sell out soon!

Starting next month, we’ll open the website to purchase ad space in the Show Program. Be on the lookout for the link! It’s a full-size, full-color program that is given to all attendees, committee members, and vendors. It’s a showcase of the entries, vendors, and lots of Quilters Guild of Plano information.

We’re also looking for more Minis! If you have a mini quilt to donate to the auction, please see Kaye Dunn or Valerie Salter. This is a highlight of the show and a great fundraiser!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS – Donna Idell and Sheri Hamilton

ROCKING BOBBIN QUILT SHOP is providing a gift certificate to every member attending the February meeting. In addition to the $10 off $20 purchase, a percentage of the money spent will be available to the Quilters Guild of Plano to purchase door prizes for members in the future! Let’s all do our part!

NINE-PATCH BLOCKS
We have several members moving away from the North Texas area and we want to show our appreciation for their membership with a set of 100 Nine-Patch Blocks each.

Please support Sue McCormick, our committee chair for Nine-Patch, by picking up several pre-cut packets to assemble or make your own nine-patch blocks and return them to Sue at the next meeting.  Sue will be sitting at the Membership Desk as you enter.

The fabric for the darker color on the X should be something that reads as one color. The light patches can be made from muslin, white fabric, or beige fabric. The blocks are collected at each guild meeting.  This is a great way to use some leftover fabric and help make a keepsake at the same time.

DRAWINGS

In addition to our two regular drawings, don’t forget to pick up a ticket for our TWO Special drawings – Two Christmas Kits.  Each is a block of the month series, including directions and all the fabric to complete the quilts. You have another chance to enter the drawing.  The winner will be announced at the February meeting.
