January 15 is the deadline to turn in the volunteer hours from Jan–Dec of 2024. Please email your name, hours, activities volunteering at the meetings, community service, retreat, and the quilt show. See Tisha Harms note at the end of the newsletter.

Guess who comes out for a party? Quilters with gifts! Who would have thought that 69 members would be so excited to come to exchange holiday packages! Great party time, good fun, lots of friendship and food at the December guild meeting. With 86 members attending and 8 more on zoom is 34% of the 282 membership! Wow!

Hey, did you know? (From one of my favorite Christmas carols.) We are all now (all y’all) in Texas but as Tisha Harms reminded us to look at our heritage during her presentation of the DAR.  I find that being a native Texas is getting more rare as I meet more members.

  • Did you know Donna Petrick, Penny Reeves and I are the only native Texans on the board?
  • Did you know Chris Fredericks, Laurie Lumston and Linda Sullivan were born in New York?
  • Did you know Anna Marie Larrabee and Val Schlake are from Illinois?
  • Did you know Beth Swiatek and Carol Truscott are from Michigan?
  • Did you know Debbie Blair was born in Germany?
  • Did you know Kris O’Connor is from Wisconsin?
  • Did you know Ginny Cherry is from Minnesota?
  • Did you know Debbie Burns is from California?
  • Did you know Lorrie Gray is from Oklahoma?
  • Did you know Christi Ables is from Virginia?
  • Did you know Ann Lau is from Indiana?

We are truly a melting pot with a common interest in quilting and giving back to the community!

And January is the time to report your volunteer hours to receive a Presidential Volunteer Service Award pin. This is due by the 15th of January for the calendar year of 2024.  Please see the article at the end of the newsletter from Tisha Harms.

We are excited to see what 2025 brings and proud to remember all we accomplished together in 2024. If you have concerns/compliments//ideas/needs/questions/thoughts for the Guild, please email:president@qgplano.org

Happy New Year!

– Jeanne

This is a chair saver that we put on the chairs to help get new members oriented by the others sitting there. Somehow one went home with someone after the December meeting.

Please email Jeanne Vogel if you know where it went. Thanks!

EDUCATION

We are excited for 2025 and have some great ideas for the education/demo table. We want to hear from you, what are some demos you would like to see, are there any demos you would like to present? Please submit this Google form, or talk to us during social time at the Education table. Let’s all learn some new tips, tricks and techniques together.

Coming up in January, stop by and check out the guild’s new website and how to navigate the site.

At the February meeting we are talking all about scraps! How to prep, organize and actually use your scraps.

GUILD ACTIVITIES

So much fun was had at the December meeting.  The holiday party was a huge success and we thank all of our wonderful volunteers for their help in hosting a party filled with laughter, friendship and an abundance of wonderful savory and sweet foods for all to enjoy.  The gift exchange exceeded our wildest expectations!  We had approximately 30 people signed up for the event and a whopping 69 came prepared to participate.  Thanks to our own MC of the Guild’s Left/Right story – our own Sara Lindsay – for writing a wonderful story that took us on an exciting shop hop around Texas!

We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year!  Let’s all gear up for some more fun in 2025!!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Happy New Year to all!  We are so excited to get started in 2025 spreading kindness to those in our community in need.  We enjoyed the wonderful support from all of our members in 2024 and look forward to working together sharing our quilted gifts in the new year.

*Join us for Sew Day at Plano Sewing Center on Tuesday January 14th from 10am until 2pm.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies and we will bring the rest!

Blessing to all!  Thank you for all you do!

Sherry Mark of Loft Supply: Why your Batting Matters

February Guild Meeting

Nova Montgomery: Those Fabulous Featherweights

February Workshop

Nova Montgomery: Singer Featherweight Maintenance

Hope your New Year is Happy! We kick off January by going back to basics. For quilters that means batting. 100% cotton, 80/20 cotton/poly, 100% bamboo, 50/50 cotton/bamboo, 100% poly, wool!?!? Yikes! What is best for your application? Sherry Mark from Loft Supply will speak at our January meeting and educate us all about what to use when. She is planning to have batting to sell; if we get more details about that, we will share.

February brings us Nova Montgomery and things all about Singer Featherweight machines. Even if you don’t have one, come listen and learn why owners think they are so great. The Featherweight Maintenance workshop on February 14 is now full, and we have started a waitlist. A Saturday, February 15 workshop is a possibility if we have enough interest.  Please email programs@qgplano.org if you want to add your name to the Interest List so we can see if it is worth it. See you at the Guild Meeting!

QGP Awards Bars
Show Charms  and Show Pins

The Quilters Guild of Plano recognizes members and rewards them to show evidence of their involvement in the guild.  Our awards are PVSA – Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Lone Star Awards, Service Year Bars and Quilt Show Charms.

The PVSA awards are in conjunction with the US government.  President Ronald Reagan started the program to honor people who voluntarily give hours of their time to help others.

  • Bronze pins are given for 150 to 249 hours.
  • Silver pins are given for 250 to 499 hours.
  • Gold pins are given for 500 plus hours.
  • After completing 4000 hours a lifetime pin is awarded.

The Lone Star Award is given by the guild president as she recognizes people who go above and beyond their normal assistance to the Guild. This can be given at any time or not at all.

The Guild offers a black enameled sewing machine to hold the annual Service Year Bars for $5.

Service Year Bars are awarded for doing 30 hours of any service to the guild.  This can include making a mini quilt for the show auction or for community service, activities, but is not limited to these activities.  All hours run for the calendar year (not fiscal).  You may submit your hours monthly or annually to the finance vice president or the designee.

Quilt Show charms are given to anyone who works at least 2 hours for the show.

Our Quilt Plano show pins are custom enamel pins that feature the show’s logo, along with the year and sell for $5. Each year, the logo is inspired by a quilt block found in the raffle quilt pattern, making these pins a special keepsake. Members love collecting each year, starting at the show’s rollout in May, creating a fun way to look back on past shows and the unique raffle quilts that accompanied them.

We have past quilt show pins for sale for $1.00.
