Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

It was wonderful to see so many people step up to our anxious call for more quilts.  Unfortunately, too many entries came in last minute so again we had to reject some. That is so hard to do when we begged for more quilts.  We have a very limited venue at the Plano Event Center and while we have tried for years to push the walls outward…it just doesn’t happen.  This year, we have been very inventive in finding new ways to place our quilts.  It’s going to be a real treat to see the quilt show this year.

Carolyn and her show committee have been very diligent about looking at everything with “new eyes” to see if we can do things differently, better and add more interest.  If you haven’t yet volunteered to help out with the show this year, please do so.  There are going to be some changes and I think you will like them.

The nominees for the board were announced at the June meeting.  Again changes about how we do things is underway, i.e. community service.  Hopefully, when you are sitting through a meeting, you are enjoying everything that is going on.  You probably don’t realize what has to happen to make this all work.  The quilt guild is a business and as such must follow guidelines set up in our By-Laws and Policy and Procedures.  As we have seen from other guilds, the past two years and the pandemic have been really hard on this type of business that is run by volunteers.

Thankfully we have done more than just survive, we have prospered.  Linda Neal and the board members at that time kept the guild together.  Let’s keep going in that direction.  The quilt show is how we fund the guild and all the wonderful programs that we enjoy.  Support the quilt show and help move us forward.

In the meantime, keep stitching.  We will need new quilts for the 2023 show.

July Guild Meeting - Thursday, July 14, 2022

Julie McLeod: Lecture

Julie is a quilt maker living and working in San Francisco’s East Bay area.

She was born and raised in England and worked as a designer in the woolen and worsted mills of Yorkshire and Scotland before taking a job with a luxury tailoring company on London’s Savile Row. A new position at a menswear textile agency in New York City brought her to the US, and she has been mostly here ever since.

Julie discovered quilt making on her travels through the small Amish towns of Pennsylvania. Some of the first quilts she made were for her young children. Fast forward a quarter century, and her quilts and interests (as well as my children!) have grown. Julie now specializes in making silk quilts, sourcing her fabrics from neckties, clothing and furnishing fabrics. She loves to rescue vintage quilt blocks and textiles and make them the starting point of a beautiful quilt.

Lecture: Everything but the Cotton

Let’s explore the world of quilts that were made with what I call ‘Not Cottons’.

When quilters don’t have access to a stash of quilter’s cotton, what do they turn to?  This one-hour lecture, trunk show, and Q & A session shows quilts – antique and modern – made of wool, silk, polyester and more. The trunk show of my own work shows what you can create with neckties, saris, kimonos and other unusual, "not cotton" textiles.

Workshop:  Starting with Silk

Date:  July 15, 2022, 10:00am – 4:00pm

Time:  10:00am – 4:00pm (1/2-hour lunch)

Location:  ZOOM

Workshop Fee:  $45.00

Many of us have silk treasures from trips abroad, neckties or prom dresses that are too special to cut up, so we leave them tucked away in a drawer or box. It’s time to get them out and make something beautiful!

This workshop has three elements: You’ll begin by determining the fiber content of your fabrics by using the burn test. We will then cover two very different ways to work with silk: First, a very free, improvisational piecing technique I call "Pieces, Pairs and Panels" and second, a foundation piecing method that gives stability and ultra-precise results, even with the lightest weight silks.

Working with your stash, you’ll construct elements in these two techniques that can be combined into a small, pillow-sized finished piece.

Workshop Sign-Up Issues

We have received reports of inconsistent behaviors on our website while members attempt to sign up for Workshops.  We are trying to resolve these issues.  Thank you for your patience.  If you encounter a problem when using the website, please wait a couple hours and try again.  At the July meeting we will take reservations for workshops, but please try the website first.  If you have any questions about Show Volunteer sign ups contact Dolores Williams or Carolyn Cosgriff.  If you have any questions about Workshop sign ups contact Tisha Harms or Lori Hutyra.  Thank you again for your patience!

Quilt Show Preview Night & General Meeting

Quilt Show

By Carolyn Cosgriff

Quilt Plano 2022 will be August 12th and 13th.

Quilt Plano 2022 is going to be a packed show—literally!  Lots of quilts in the judged show and special exhibits, more vendors (many new this year), plus the mini-quilt auction is full.  We’ve even had to add pages to the program to accommodate more ads.  The fact that most of the critical elements are falling into place is due to work by many people, especially the registration team of Tisha Harms and Jenny Hilton.  As Donna mentioned, a whole bunch of entries came in over the last 48 hours.

The one looming gap is volunteers.  We still have over 200 open work shifts.  It is human nature to procrastinate, but let’s not wait to sign up—do it today.  Go to www.qgplano.org and follow the links under Quilt Show, Show Volunteers.  Enlist a friend to come along and enjoy some quality time together plus support the guild.  Or, just come and make some new friends.  There are opportunities for all types of skills and mobility levels.  A four-hour shift entitles any volunteer to free admission.

The July meeting is the last day to purchase lunches, $14.  Remember, food cannot be brought into the Event Center on show days.  Either purchase a lunch in advance, or plan to patronize the concession stand.  Lauri Lumston (laurie.lumston@gmail.com) can help you if you want to secure a lunch before the guild meeting.

Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at the July meeting.  If you have not yet purchased a bundle, please do so.

Selfie Station

“We have one corner perfect for a Selfie Station.  We just need a volunteer(s) to create an attractive background, and set it up Wednesday or Thursday before the Preview Party.  Please contact Carolyn (cosgriff.ce@gmail.com) if you have ideas!”

Call for 2024 Raffle Quilt Committee

By Donna Petrick

Do you think it’s too early to think about a raffle quilt for 2024?  I think it’s wonderful to be looking this far in advance to start planning it, instead of being in a panic trying to create another work or art and get finished in time to sell advance tickets and take the quilt to other guilds.  However, I need for someone to say “Yes, I’ll start it”

Discuss it with your friends.  See if they are willing to help since we have time to do a plan.  Then step up.  Commit to making the next raffle quilt.  We need a design, an estimate of cost, and a plan to get it done.  Be in charge of making the 2024 raffle quilt.  Get your information together and bring it before the board.  Let’s get working on 2024.

Contact me if you have questions or if you just need more information.  petrickdl@outlook.com

Community Service

By Linda Neal

The “dog days of summer” are apparently here, but Community Service is still up and running like a big dog!  A big Thank You to Patricia Becerra for stepping up and hosting our monthly Sit and Sew/Drop off meeting at Plano Sewing Center.  As always we had a steady stream of donations and pick ups.  We had several new members stop by.  New members are always welcome to assist with Community Service.  You can do as much or as little as you want.

I would also like to thank Jeanne Vogel and the nominating committee for finding a new VP of Community Service and a team to lend her support.  Bonnie Cook is a new member and will be taking over in September.  Along with her team: Pam Walsh, Valerie Schlake, Laurie Lumston, Barbara Pepin, Evelyn Cheek and LaDawn Daley.  It is nice to see some new members joining Community Service.  It is a great way to get involved and meet other quilters while helping the Plano Community.

If you didn’t get your panel quilt top finished in time for the May drawing–no problem!  We will accept them anytime–no late fees.  Lol.

Happy sewing and stay cool!

Quilts of Valor

By Carolyn Cosgriff

A small, but very joyful Quilts of Valor presentation was made June 22.  We awarded one made by guild members Karen Freeman, Jeanne Vogel, and Beth Swiatek; and one on behalf of the honorees sister-in-law.   It is another example of how creative one can be with the quilts–it was T-shirt fronts from his running days on the front, and patriotic themed on the back.  Donna Petrick and Julie Cohagan assisted—Donna demonstrated her expert skills on the spot when she found a tiny opening.   Thanks to all!

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

We are just one month away from our quilt show! Such an exciting time to celebrate quilting, view all of the spectacular quilts, and of course to spend money with our vendors!  Oh - and don’t forget about the raffle quilt!  Since we are all so busy with the show, we are still holding back on the activities.  HOWEVER - we will start our Fancy Free Friendship Block Exchange as soon as the show is over.  We are calling it Fancy Free because the blocks will not have points to match up when they are sewn together and they will also be trimmed down from the size that the pattern specifies prior to construction, just in case we run across some inconsistencies.  This should be a fun exchange!  Look for the block pattern to be posted in the next newsletter and online.  Then we will show sample blocks and announce details of the exchange at the September Guild Meeting.

A New Group --> Bag Making Zoom Group - Donna Petrick

I haven’t forgotten that I asked for people who would be interested in a bag making small group meeting on Zoom………..I just seem to be a little short of time.  I did have several of you who indicated you would like this.  So let me try again to get this one up and running.  I have a couple of bags I want to make, just need to find the time.  Let me know if you want a day time or night time meeting.  Email me at petrickdl@outlook.com and I promise to start this small group.

If you work, join us on a Saturday!  When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending.  Those who have not previously notified me, please email pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

Pieceful Organization - Sarah Krauss & Jeanne Vogel   (Now we will meet twice a month!)

If you are feeling “abode overload," we will:  relieve clutter, stress, struggle and feelings of being overwhelmed.  We are Zooming on the 3rd and the 4th Wednesday's from 1:30-3:30 pm using the inspiration from a workshop we attended.  Organization will change your clutter and chaos to start the day fresh with your stuff organized.  Less chaos leads to more productive quilt making.  Please contact pickincotton26@verizon.net for an invitation.

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Our meetings have been a huge success.  It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs.  A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We also share our samples and ask/answer questions.  Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798

Hand Applique Small group - Linda Neal

We meet the first Monday of each month at 10:00 on Zoom.  The first Monday in July is July 4th.  We will skip this month due to the holiday. Have a great 4th of July!  Our August meeting will be August 1st at 10:00.  If you are interested in joining our hand applique Zoom group, please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

English Paper Piecing Small Group - Linda Neal

We meet on the third Tuesday at 10:00 on Zoom. July 19th and August 16th are our next meetings.  Whether you are new to English Paper Piecing or a pro, we would love to have you join our group.   Our group is informal and fun!!  For a link,  please email Linda Neal (lindanealmck@hotmail.com) for the link.

Hoop It Up Bee Donna Petrick

The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom.  We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell.  We are open to all levels of users.  If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us.  Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.
