LETTER FROM GUILD PRESIDENT – Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

Dates to mark on your calendar:

July 8 – Community Service sew day at the Plano Sewing Center 10-2

July 10 – Guild meeting

July 28 – Board meeting

Aug 2 – 8-1pm drop off entries on Tuesday

Aug 2–9 – Quilt Show Week

Aug 7 – Preview night with guild meeting, family members welcome

(Note: Guild meeting is one week earlier on the 1st Thursday)

Aug 8 & 9 – Quilt Show 2025

Never undervalue the difference you make and the lives you touch with a quilt.

The guild has been given several large donations of fabric and the plethora of items that are needed for making quilts. We will be having these items as door prizes or as a special door prize that you must be present to put your name in for the drawing at the Membership table.

Time. We all have it and now we need a couple of hours of your time in our giveback program. The Quilt Show is what we use to finance the speakers, programs, pay for workshops, pay for all the large and small items that make us work well, the updated website, the post office box, the bank safety box, paper, ribbons for the show and more. Please sign up for working at least 2 hours at the show. On the website, go to Quilt Show/Volunteers–and then choose Tues-Wed-Thurs-Fri-or Saturday. It’s a great time to visit with other members and learn more about the guild. See you there.

– Jeanne

Why not sign-up together! If you are in a small group, make sure your friends are signed up- our show needs all of us to make it the huge success that it is!!

Photography Policy: Photographs are welcome at the Quilt Show; however, we ask that photographers respect the copyright protection to which our quiltmakers are entitled. They must either include the quilt signage listing the quiltmaker in their photo or they must obtain written permission from the quiltmaker before posting a photo on the internet or duplicating the design in any fashion for any purpose. Any portion of the Quilt Show, including Vendors, Special Exhibits, and the Featured Quilter, are given the opportunity to restrict photos of their displays or exhibits.

Video Live Streaming Policy: To promote the show to those who cannot attend and to raise awareness for the event, video live streaming will be encouraged beginning with the 2025 Show. Videographers should tag the Quilt Plano Show in their posts. Videographers are encouraged to register ahead of time to be aware of our requirements and to secure special video live streaming benefits, including access to the Show prior to the public, access to the catwalk for overhead viewing, and access to Committee members for interviews and Q&A. Discounted admission will be granted to videographers who register in advance. Please see our website and show program for more details.

One last thing- don’t forget to turn in your volunteer hours to Donna Petrick so that you can get a 2025 bar to hang your charm on!

GUILD ACTIVITIES

We are gearing up for a great July meeting.  Together with Community Service we will be kicking off the  MISSION (NOT) IMPOSSIBLE ACTIVITY!

Your mission – should you choose to accept it – is to create a baby to twin size quilt by doing the following:

  • At the July meeting, at the Activities table, pick up a bag filled with +/- fat quarters in one color wave – think blues, yellows, purples – maybe even black or white.
  • Add one additional fabric from your stash – in a different color.
  • Create a quilt – from baby size to twin size from the stash.
  • How you accomplish this mission is up to you.  It is imperative that you choose your own pattern, the extra fabric. Cut, sew and complete the top.
  • This mission is to be completed by the September meeting.  Bring in the completed top for Show N Tell.  Community Service will then do their magic by adding the batting and backs for quilting.
  • Mission Goal ~ To create a top which will then be quilted and given to a person who is in need of comfort.

PLEASE NOTE ~ THIS MESSAGE WILL SELF DESTRUCT IN 10 MINUTES.  GOOD LUCK QUILTERS!

(SIDEBAR  NOTE ~ THERE ARE NO DOUBLE AGENTS WATCHING SO IF THE QUILT TOP ISN’T DONE UNTIL OCTOBER YOU WILL ONLY BE SUBJECT TO THE GUILDS CONTINUAL SUPPORT AS YOU WORK ON COMPLETING YOUR MISSION.

Chris & Anna Marie

EDUCATION

At the July Meeting, we will continue our “Tips & Tricks” demos.

Stop by the Education table to enter your favorite “Tip or Trick” to be entered in the drawing which will be held during the meeting.  We will have a couple of fun tips to share and a Tips and Tricks handout which will also be uploaded to the QGP Website.

If you have a demo you would like to present at a guild meeting or have suggestions of demos you would like to see, please let us know.

PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS

Did Christa Watson inspire you at the June guild meeting to get some of your unquilted tops off the shelf and finished? She sure inspired a whole bunch of ladies that were able to get to her Walking Foot and Freemotion Bootcamps!

 “I thought it was amazing!

“My head is still buzzing about FMQ, but in a good way.”

“I was hoping to get some ideas to help me with quilting one of my Special Exhibit quilts and Christa did not disappoint.

“ I think it was a great class and I wish I had gone to both classes!! ”

“The class was great and I thoroughly enjoyed her teaching method.

Don’t be surprised if you hear encouragement from our MINIs to use your walking foot to spice up a Mini Entry for a future Show! OR use your walking foot to help finish the backlog of Community Service quilts. Our next workshop isn’t till October. Dee Bushrod will be lecturing on and teaching about Pixel Quilts. Signup is open and almost ½ full so don’t wait. Sign up at a meeting or on the website.

Meanwhile, join us July 10 as we Zoom in with Sue Heinz of Kismet Quilting to learn the mysteries of how glue can help us in quilting?!?!  See you at the guild meeting!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Valerie Schlake and Debbie Blair

Summer is here and we’ve been busy.  Hope you all are having a great summer! Our last Sew Day had a full house. We still have room for more. Come join us on the second Tuesday of the month at Plano Sewing Center. Just bring your sewing machine and basic supplies and we’ll provide the rest.

We are still looking for longarmers as we have quite a few quilts to be longarmed still. We have our grab and go projects too. You can pick these up at our Sew Day or the Guild Meeting.

We are planning with Guild Activities to have the mystery bag challenge ready for the July Guild Meeting.  Looking forward to the beautiful quilt tops that you all will come up with.

If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help in any way please contact Debbie & Val at communityservice@qgplano.org

QUILTS OF VALOR

A huge thank you to the people who have made tops, long-armed, and bound quilts of valor in the last few weeks. A reminder to those making blocks for the sampler quilt incorporating the fabrics handed out at the May meeting, please turn in your 12 ½ by 12 ½ blocks at the July community sew day or guild meeting at the community service table.

Several long-armers have promised to have quilts done by the July meeting. Those quilts will need binding, so please stop by the community service table if you want an indoor project for the hot July days.

Looking for blues! The next group project is a smattering of white stars against a blue rail fence background.  The quilt needs 63 blue blocks, 8” finished. If your stash includes any dark blues that read as solids, we are in the market for strips 2 ½ wide and 9” or longer. Of course, feel free to sew sets of 2, 3, or 4 together. Drop them off at the community sew day or the guild meeting.

BEEKEEPER BUZZ – From the Beekeepers

July is a great time to start something new, meet new quilters and enlarge your circle of friends. Fran Levy and Kelly Ann Hebeler are available to help you form a small group if interested. Please contact them or chat with them at the guild meeting.

Great news!!  Bonnie Cook is interested in hosting an evening Small Group (Bee) for women who aren’t available during the day. Please email her at bcook111698@gmail.com
