Letter from the President

By Linda Neal

It’s October.  School is back in session and going strong.  Fall is starting.  The leaves are starting the drop into my pool and we’ve had a few cooler days.  It seems normal until I realize the “school in session” consists of my grandchildren doing virtual learning at my kitchen table!  And Fall is starting…… but the Texas State Fair is now done by “drive through.”  Reality hits hard. We are still in “COVID times”  with not much going to change anytime soon.

So, for the foreseeable future, this is how things are going to be.  We are going to have to just “go with the flow.”  The “flow” being Zoom guild meetings, Zoom board meetings, and Community Service drop off days.  People join guilds to attend meetings and hear great speakers.  But, they also join guilds to meet other quilters.  And that’s hard to do with only monthly guild meetings.  And those of you who have come to the Community Service Drop Off Day you know  the BEST part is getting to see your fellow guild members.  It’s fun to see what they have been working on (or completing) and what’s going on with them and their family.

For hundreds of years quilters have meet together and formed Quilting Bees.  And with COVID preventing groups of people meeting together, Zoom group meetings are the next best thing.  To help members connect with each other we have started several small groups.  While it’s not as great as meeting in person, for now this is our “new normal.”  And after a short time, you forget you’re on Zoom, and it’s just a bunch of quilters chatting in a small group.  You don’t even need to put your shoes on to attend.

All you need to do to join a small group is to be a guild member and email the leader of the group.  And with everything being on Zoom, members can live anywhere.  So, if you have friends or family who would love to join our guild, hear our speakers, participate in guild activities, and join our small groups--invite them to join our guild.  We are going to be increasing our social media presence and increasing our communication with guild members.  We will be adding more small groups.  If you have a suggestion or want to start a small group--let me know.  The guild board has had to make a lot of big changes over a short amount of time.  We are gearing up for a great year.

Happy Stitching!

Carmen Geddes  of Tensisters Handcraft – Lecture and Trunk Show

I had the pleasure of meeting Carmen in 2018 at the Houston Quilt Festival. It was there that I took a class with her and totally enjoyed her warm, enthusiastic personality along with her great quilting techniques. It was quickly after that encounter that we booked her for this month’s quest speaker!

Carmen was raised in a big family of 17 kids--10 girls and 7 boys. It is no surprise that her business name is Tensisters Handicraft. All of the sisters enjoy quilting.

She loves the traditional quilt patterns of days past, but loves new, easy techniques to make the process fun, faster, and successful. She has developed the Tensisters Piping Tool and the Tensisters Easy Piecing Grid with its companion book, “Ten Quilts for Ten Sisters.”

Here are two samples of quilts using the Tensisters Easy Piecing Grid.

Quilt Plano 2021

By Donna Petrick

We are still in a holding pattern for next year’s quilt show.  No news at this time.  I’ll set up a meeting for the show committee for sometime in October to discuss our options.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Community Service

By Dolores Williams and Valerie Salter

We had another successful pick-up / take-in day on September 22.  We want to thank Plano Sewing Center for letting us be inside the store since it rained the entire time we were there.

We brought in 30 pillowcases, 84 completed quilts, 8 tops, and 4 stockings, and a large number of dog beds.  Also, we gave out everything we brought to distribute.   Thank you very much to everyone that helped make it a successful day.  We also received a donation of 2 tubs of fabric, most of which was batiks in large pieces.  We will put them to good use.

The best part of the day was seeing so many guild members.  We have missed seeing our friends, so this was a day to meet and greet, though we were very cautious and all wore masks and kept our distance.

We are planning another pick-up / take-in day for either late October or early November.  We will let you know more when we finalize the details.

 Keep quilting and stay safe,

Free Motion Quilting Bee – Monica Hendewerk

Need a little motivation to practice free motion quilting for a few hours a month?  Monica Hendewerk has offered to coordinate monthly Zoom meetings during which we will actually be practicing our free motion quilting.  Monica will be working on a domestic machine, but practice can just as easily be done on a long-arm!  Some initial ideas are to provide one beginner and one intermediate/advanced design or exercise for those that want to follow along, and have other members free motion on their own.  We can share our samples and also have tips, tricks, and help discussions.  Any and all ideas are welcome!  The first session will be on Monday, October 26th at 1 pm.  The group can decide on a day, time, and frequency for the meetings at our first session.   Please send an e-mail to Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested. mhendewerk@gmail.com

Machine Embroidery Zoom Group -- Donna Petrick

Any member interested in machine embroidery is invited to join our new zoom small group which meets the 3rd Thursday each month at 10:00 am.  Send me an email petrickdl@outlook.com requesting to join the group so I can send you the information to sign in.

We met for the first time on Thursday, September 17th.  Lots of interest in show and tell and in learning new techniques.  October and November meetings will include techniques taught by Monica Hendewerk and Tisha Harms.

Hope more of you will join in the near future.

The Connected Project  (a Foundation Paper Piecing pattern)

Pattern by Happy Sew Lucky  Berene Campbell

Berene Campbell of Happy Sew Lucky designed this project as a way for quilters to connect during the Covid-19 pandemic to show that while we may be physically isolated we are never alone.

This project is designed for guild members to make the block and that when we are all showing our completed blocks we will form one connected chain.  Ideally we would be in a room together standing in a circle to make the chain.  But we will Zoom it!

Now if you are not familiar with Foundation Paper Piecing do not be afraid of this project as it is sooo super easy and there are numerous YouTube videos you can watch before you make the commitment.  Happy Sew Lucky has several, but there are so many others also available.

You will have to sign up for this project and promise to commit to the timelines so that we are ready for the big reveal at our December guild meeting.  You will be a part of the team and each person of that team will create one piece of the block for each team member.   The instructions call for teams of 8, but if we only have teams of 4 then each person will have to make 2 pieces of the block.  You will then have to either mail or deliver your pieces to the other members of your team.

As soon as we get the teams created, I will then email each group a list of members' names and contact information.  I will mail (and email) out the templates with more instructions and details with the instructions for your group.

Now her instructions have us all sewing the pieces together over a Zoom meeting, but we will go ahead and have our ‘link’ completed before the big reveal at the December guild meeting.

Ok so here is the timeline:

  •   Send you Name, Email address and your Mailing address to Activities@QGPlano.org by October 18, 2020.
  •   Include your favorite color.
  •   Commit to have your pieces made and in the mail (or hand deliver) to your teammates by November 15, 2020.

I am sure you will have questions, and you are more than welcome to read about the project on her website and get a visual of the project.  When you see the block you will see why I say this is easy.  Now maybe FPP just isn’t in your wheelhouse, we are working on traditional piecing instructions.

I look forward to all of us Connecting and sending out 2020 with a swift kick and a ‘you’re outta here’.  We are truly stronger together and our guild is our strong quilty link.

I hope you enjoy this project.

Membership

By  Sue Rentz & Karen Edmondson

The membership year of the Quilters Guild of Plano runs from October 1st through September 30th.  We usually get a large amount of our memberships, either new or renewals, at the August show, but, of course, there wasn’t one.  We need the support of our members!

To date, 55 people have either joined or renewed, but this is compared to over 350 people who were members last year.  The board has decided to have a one-time contest for obtaining memberships.  Thanks to Donna Petrick’s work, we have some fantastic prizes that will be awarded to several members, chosen by a drawing.  If you have already joined or renewed, you are eligible.  If your membership reaches me by October 31st, the deadline, you will be eligible.

Instructions on payment are in this month’s newsletter.  There are two methods—paying by credit card online or printing out the membership form and sending that plus your check for $30 to the address on the form.

This year we are not printing membership cards.  However, we are emailing a pdf of your membership card, which can be printed if you like.  If you think that your dues have been paid but you haven’t received that card from us, please contact us at membership@qgplano.org.

Remember, the deadline for entries is October 31st.

Attendance at the September meeting was approximately 91.  Door prizes were from Not Your Mama’s Quilt Store, Sew Let’s Quilt It, Rockin’ Bobbin, Against the Grain, Quilt Country, and Stitched with Love.  The winners, chosen from the Chat window by a random number generator, were Judy Johnson, Chanda Smith, Jeanne Vogel, Michael Davison, and Fran Casey.

Prizes for Membership Sign-ups

Due to our Covid-19 experience, lack of quilt show, and for this year only, the board has decided to offer a prize drawing for all those who sign up new or renew their membership by October 31.  Payment and/or paperwork must be received by October 31st to be eligible.  This will include all who have already signed up for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

Prizes are:

  • 1st Prize:  A set of Quilters Select rulers donated by Plano Sewing Center, valued at $200.  This includes the following sizes: 12” square, 8.5” square, 4.5” square, 3.5” square, 2.5” square, 6.5 x 24” ruler and 3” x 12” ruler. (12” square is on order, thus not shown)

Stocking and Pet Beds Report

By Martha O'Grady

Stockings

I finally got around to counting the stockings, a little less than 1600. The ones in the “barn” will probably put us over that amount. Good work guys! I am so glad that we completed this before the shutdown. I hate to think how we might have been scrambling to complete this project as the deadline came. Y’all are so wonderful!

I contacted Soldiers Angels to get the process started of passing them along. In the past, we have met at the Starbucks across the street from Joann’s in McKinney. Not sure how we will get drop off to work now. We shall see.

Shelter Pet Beds

Yep, I still have beds donated in March.  YAY.

Most of you know that one of the small groups in our guild is “Art Quilter’s of Plano”. We take turns demoing a technique, and I had signed up for June. Since our group is no longer meeting, I did mine totally online using stocking leftovers, and the tutorial is on the Facebook group, including pictures of each step, if anyone is interested. I will have a very beautiful quilt when I’m done.

A friend from church gave me a big bag of quilt leftovers. Mixed together I found yardage, fabric that I can use for stockings, fat quarters still in their packaging, fabric and batting pieces big enough to be cut up and used, crumbs, sliver trims; a very nice assortment. Very little of it needed to be put into a pet bed. No, I don’t want anyone else to do the same. That would be quite overwhelming if everybody did it. My point is that we need to be creative with our leftover chunks of fabric, as shelters are taking fewer beds.

I also found something that I had not seen before. My friend had taken a jelly roll of batting and cut it into about 10 inch sections then used it for crumb piecing. Crumbs are pieces that most of us would discard, but that measure at least 1.5 inches. She sewed these crumbs going down the length of each and it yielded units of about 2.5 inches by 10 inches, batting on one side and fabric on the other. She made dozens of these. She had taken one, and put a backing onto it, making a bookmark sized little quilt. My guess is she did what I have done so many times. She came up with a grand idea, spent lots of time working on it, and at the very last step found out that OH, NO! It doesn’t really work. So, I took them and applied them to a fat quarter. The joining method that I used was the same on most of us use when we join sections of batting. I zigzagged between two. After each seam, I checked and made sure I was happy before doing the next.  POOF! I had a “pieced” cuddle. It turned out really cute.  It is ready for the next Community Service drop off. I did a bunch more. I will have several cuddles to take.

I saw an article about taking what I would call slivers and threads and making a new fabric out of them. She arranged them between a sandwich of wash-away stabilizer, and then stippled all over it. After washing away the stabilizer, she had a new fabric to be used as embellishment or whatever. It was very pretty.

Letter from the President

By Linda Neal

I have been a quilter now for 16 years.  When I started, I was just looking for a creative outlet away from cross stitching.  After making a million little X’s on aida cloth, I was ready for a change.  I went to the Dallas quilt show.  I could not believe the quilts, the vendors, the people.  It was a loud and vibrant convention center with people all enjoying a common interest--quilting.

I purchased a machine and started taking some classes.  I heard about quilt guilds, but I did not think I was good enough to join a guild.  But, over time, I met a lady in a class who invited me to visit her guild and attend a retreat.  It was then that I realized that quilting was not just about sewing pieces together with a  perfect ¼ inch seam.   Quilting was about socializing.  Guild meetings are  just a big party every month for quilters.  And small groups--those are just like block parties with your neighbors.

And then COVID-19 hit.  All the parties came to an abrupt halt.  No quilt shows, no guild meetings, and not even a block party.  But, as quilters we adapted.  We have found another way to party--online with Zoom.  Guild meetings, small groups, and even some quilt shows are happening.  We are once again gathering and sewing.  Instead of speakers traveling to lecture, they are able to “Zoom” into our houses.  Small groups are organizing and thriving. I have joined a class on Zoom where the instructor is in the San Francisco Bay area.  It all kind of reminds me of that line in Jurassic Park, “ Life will find a way.”

Renew your membership today.  Come out and join us on Zoom.  Join us at guild meetings with an awesome line up of Zoom speakers.  Join us in the small groups we are organizing. In September we are starting with small groups for Featherweights, Machine Embroidery, Hand Applique and English Paper Piecing.  Yes, it is different. But, we will still all be together doing what we love. And together we will get through 2020!  Happy Stitching.

2020 Raffle Quilt

By Donna Petrick

Congratulations to Tina Connolly for winning the two beautiful raffle quilts for this year!!  We had a nice turnout on Saturday, August 8th to turn in community service items and to draw for the quilts.  We made just over $4000 which though not as much as we had hoped was still a nice sum.  Thank you to all of you who bought tickets and made donations.

Let’s hope that next year we get to have a quilt show and make money on our next quilt.

The guest speaker for our September Zoom guild meeting has changed. Leo Ransom, who was previously scheduled, will be rescheduled when we are able to meet in person again.

We now will welcome Ellen Lindner! Ellen comes to us from Melbourne, Florida.

She is a talented quilt artist and teacher, who is passionate about making fabric into art.  She says, “I make art for the pure joy of doing so!”  Known for its strong contrasts and vivid colors, her art has been shown throughout the United States, and beyond, has been commissioned by several well-known hospitals, and has been published in several magazines. Ellen has been seen on Quilting Arts TV, where she taught some of her techniques.  She’s also written two books and several magazine articles.

Her work is very diverse, ranging from pictorial still lifes to modernist abstracts.  In addition to using commercial fabrics, Ellen has recently started dying much of her own fabric. This enlivens her pieces and gives her one more way to control the results. She works in a freeform collage style, while borrowing heavily from traditional quilt making techniques.

Ellen Lindner – Lecture: Adventures in Color

Color is the first thing we notice about a quilt. It either attracts us or repels us. Learn how to avoid color surprises in your quilts, and how to get color to work for you. Basic color theory is explained in simple terms, and demonstrated with fabulous quilts. A variety of different color combinations are discussed, from subdued to dramatic.

Quilt Plano 2021

By Donna Petrick

It certainly seems strange to be thinking about 2021 quilt show when we ought to just be recovering from the 2020 show.  But that is what this year has brought to us.   We will have a zoom show meeting later this year to talk about our options.

If you are interested in being on the show committee, please contact me.  We can always have more than one person doing any job.  It helps with the learning curve for each job.  I’m not sure what positions will be open at this point.  But we will put you to work.

I still have not disposed of the old hanging system and would like to clear it out of the storage unit in the near future.  If you know of anyone who could use wooden poles in various lengths, send them my way.

Community Service

By Dolores Williams and Valerie Salter

Community Service is remaining active during the Pandemic. I have been taking about one day a week and doing community service sewing.  So far I have made about twelve tops and have sewn at least 50 backs for the quilt tops we have stored in the ‘Barn’. For a while our charities were not allowing donations to come in.  They are now opening their doors to donations and are ready to accept quilts, huggies, baby hats, etc.  We are collecting donations from members and distributing them to our organizations.

We will have another pick-up and drop-off day on September 22, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.  More information about where will be posted on the website plus we will have an email go out for a reminder.

Both Valerie and I will be returning as co-chairs of Community Service next year and hope to keep the guild’s momentum going forward for helping our communities’ charities. I want to mention that we have a lot of fabric stored in my ‘Barn’ (an air conditioned metal building that is 24’ x 30’).  If you would like to do community service sewing but are running out of fabric (Ha, Ha), we have plenty stored here.  Some people send me a shopping list and I pull fabrics they need.  Others come out and pick their own.  We need to remember that this fabric is owned by the guild for guild use, so please feel free to use it to make things for our charities. We use the fabric to make kits for tops and then make the backings.  Smaller pieces are used for pillowcases.  We are hoping to start making kits for tops again.  We will not be having our Community Service Sew days for a while yet, but the patterns we make are easy and fun to make.  We will be distributing them at the drop-off, pick-up day.

Happy September Everybody.  Surely fall is just around the corner.  Happy Birthday to all of us September babies!  Mine usually falls on Labor Day weekend, and so I milk it for a week!  My poor husband.

So I hope everyone enjoyed the table runners.  All of my fabric is packed up and in storage so I have not had a chance yet to make anything.  The only thing not packed are quilts that need bindings (yawn, lol).

For September I have a super simple tote.  If you have been looking for something to do with those charm packs that you’ve been hoarding - this is it! The pattern will be uploaded to the website under activities.

Enjoy and please send us pictures of your totes and your table runners!

Membership

By  Sue Rentz & Karen Edmondson

Our August Zoom meeting attendance increased to approximately 73 members.  We’re looking forward to having a speaker in September, so our numbers should continue to rise.  We awarded door prizes using a random number generator to Bri Loftis, Mary Ellen England, Ginny Cherry, and Aggie Meszaros.  Thanks go to the donors of our door prizes:  Box Car Quilts, Not Your Mama’s Quilt Store, Sew Let’s Quilt It, and Rockin’ Bobbin.

Membership dues for the year 2020-2021 are now coming in.  Our quilt show normally brings in lots of new members plus renewals, but that wasn’t to be this year, thanks to the global pandemic.  We know that our loyal members will want to renew now, as we need to support our guild during these difficult times.

There are two ways to pay your dues, and you can pick the one that works best for you.

  • By credit card Login under membership, click the button labeled Pay Your Dues, and fill in necessary information to charge to a credit card.
  • By check Under the membership heading on the website, click on Membership, then Membership Information.  In the first paragraph on that page, click on Membership Form.  Print the form that appears and mail it with your check for $30 to the post office box indicated on the form.

What a great first Zoom meeting! We had great participation and I have received lots of positive feedback. Thank you Diane Poor for being our Zoom moderator. It was so great to “see” everyone and visit--even if it was only on my iPad. Quilting is such a social activity, and I have really missed all of my “quilty” friends.

As we enter August, I thought we would be counting down to Quilt Plano 2020. Never in a million years did I think my first year as guild President would be learning to navigate Zoom, leading board meetings on Zoom, and trying to figure out how to keep the guild running while we all “shelter in place.” Don’t even get me started on sewing masks.... The crowning glory was that Quilt Stores were considered “essential businesses” and could remain open when many businesses were forced to close. As quilters, we already knew that quilt stores were essential. Now it’s official.

As much as I hate staying home, I will admit that I have loved every minute I have spent quilting. Three weeks ago, I added the “Elevate” computer to my Gammill. I have been quilting Community Service quilts like a crazy person. Who knew it could be so much fun??!! It’s amazing to me that even a plain top can be made beautiful with a simple edge to edge pattern. I have tried all different patterns so I can see how they “stitch out.” I am just about ready to load number 50- it’s unbelievable how fast a computerized machine can quilt. I get some housework done while the rows are stitching. Maybe someday I will quilt some of the finished tops that have been aging in my closet. But for now, the guild has tons of tops that need quilting. Never a dull moment.

Have a great month everyone and stay safe! I hope to see you on Zoom at the next guild meeting. If you haven’t tried Zoom--give it a try. It’s very easy to navigate. Send in your pictures for show and tell. I know lots of UFOs are getting finished! And if you need a new project--Guild Activities has a link to two beautiful table runners. Happy Stitching!

Quilt Plano 2020 Raffle Tickets

By Donna Petrick

It’s almost time!! We need to sell as many tickets in the next two weeks as we possibly can. Those who want to be in attendance for the drawing are certainly welcome to attend. We will meet on the parking lot, east side of the Plano Event Center, under the trees. Drawing will be at 3:30 on Saturday, August 8th as stated on our tickets.

Thank you to those of you who have returned your stubs and bought more tickets. If you need more tickets to sell, please let me know. We can make arrangements to meet.

As an additional note to community service, City Place has been in need of larger lap quilts as they have taken in a number of teenagers during this time. We delivered 22 larger quilts with pillowcases this past week. But that took most of that size quilts that we have ready.

Hello, my fellow quilters! How I miss you all! Our last quilt meeting via Zoom was the next best thing to meeting in person. It was a great experience and to actually see friends’ faces and to hear your voices was wonderful.

I am pleased to announce that each guest speaker that was scheduled for the Fall has agreed to present his or her guild lecture via Zoom:

  • September - Leo Ransom
  • October – Carmen Geddes
  • November – Katie Pasquini Masopust

At our September Zoom guild meeting, Leo Ransom will conduct a presentation. Leo is so well known for his outstanding quilt portraits. He belongs to the Sherman Quilt Guild, right up the road in Sherman, Texas. Leo has won awards as a mixed media artist and as a quilt artist. He states, “My most prized win is my “1st Place victory" in the Master's Art category of the Dallas Quilt Show in 2018.”

Quilt Plano 2020/21

By Donna Petrick

I will certainly miss seeing all of you at the quilt show this year. But there is always next year and we will plan on a really great show then.  Later this year, Joan Hammett and I will set up a Zoom meeting for the show committee to discuss plans for 2021.

If you are interested in being on the show committee, please contact me so that I can add you to our list. Not sure what committee openings we will have, but we are sure to have some. Working on the committee and at the quilt show is a great way to meet guild members and make new friends.

Community Service

By Dolores Williams and Valerie Salter

I want to again give many thanks to everyone that turned in quilts and other Community Service items in June.   Our charities are starting to accept items and are in need.  Thanks to our generous members, we were able to deliver 62 quilts, 73 pillowcases, 47 cuddles and 5 baby caps.

The charities we donated to this month are:  The Samaritan Inn, Advocacy Center, Children’s Hospital, and the City Place.

It feels good to be able to help our community again.

We will have another drop-off, pick-up day on August 8th.  The Quilt Show Committee will be drawing the winner of our raffle quilts on the 8th so Community Service will join them for the pick-up, drop-off day.  We will be at the Plano Event Centre, 2000 E. Spring Creek Pkwy. Plano, TX 75074.  (Where we would normally have our quilt show).  We will be under the trees on the east side of the center, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.

We will have quilts that need binding and quilt kits and pillowcase kits to give out.  We will take in all the goodies you have been working on for community service.

Happy Birthday to all our August guys and gals. Hello, August in Texas! Yep, it is hot.

I hope you are enjoying your summer and are enjoying the table runner(s) activity. If you need the patterns, they are up under activities on the website.

Stay cool and stay hydrated.

Membership

By Sue Rentz and Karen Edmondson

It was wonderful to see so many members at our first Zoom guild meeting. It was hard to get an exact count, but we estimate that there were 65 members present. We were glad to be able to award several door prizes after members signed in to Chat, and we used a random number generator to make the awards. The winners were Donna Petrick, Terry Reisinger, Michael Davison, and Judy Johnson. Our prizes were graciously given by Quarter Squared Quilts, Stitchin’ Heaven, Box Car Quilts, and Against the Grain.

Stocking and Pet Beds Report

By Martha O'Grady

Stockings

Not much to report on with our stockings as I am sure that most of you are making masks at a feverish pace. Isn’t it lucky that we finished the stockings before all of this started?

If anyone would like to come by my house and pick up stocking kits, call me. Tell me how many you need, and any interesting details that either could or could not be reported here. Let me know which.

As we continue to do our part in facing this historic pandemic, it is easy to begin to have tunnel vision and to think of only what we, ourselves are experiencing in our own little microcosm. Here is a picture of some of the soldiers serving in the Middle East. Note their restrooms in the background, port-o-lets, yuck!  We think that it is hot here, but in some places where soldiers are, it is much hotter. Any of y’all who are veterans know some of what these brave folks face every day. Thanks to each of you for everything you have done to support this ministry. Also, notice that their masks do not match. That tells me that they have been the recipients of the generosity of folks just like you!

Here is the latest from Soldiers Angels: Since the start of the pandemic, the army has dispatched over 50,000 soldiers to states across the country to help build hospitals, support hospital staff, delivered food, even managed nursing homes and other facilities.

Shelter Pet Beds

So, let’s have some happier news. Little Patrick is now 4 months old. I am not the least prejudiced when I say that he is the cutest baby of all time!

I have been working on one of my “bucket list” items, also known as a golden UFO (one more than 10 years old). I had made all of the arcs a few years back and then got busy with other projects. When it surfaced in the churning black hole that is my sewing room, I realized that some of my little trapezoid-shaped wedges were now rotten. After ripping and tearing those out and remaking the arcs, I had quite a pile of small useless pieces of fabric, enough to fill a pet bed. Well, not quite, but that is where they went. After a couple of days of work, I was where I thought I had been when I opened my tub.

All of this is to make a point. When working with older fabric, make sure it is still good BEFORE you sew it into something! If it turns out that the piece is not good anymore, it can stuff a pet bed!

COVID-19 cases in Texas are zooming... And so it is time for the guild to Zoom too! THE QGP board had already canceled meetings and our quilt show, but with the number of COVID cases increasing the board needed to make some tough decisions to keep the guild going. The QGP board had already been meeting by Zoom for the past 3 months. It has been going very well. Most of us were new to Zoom but found it very easy to use. My personal small group has been having weekly meetings on Zoom too.  It has been great to keep up with friends and see what projects everyone has been working on.

We realize that Zoom will be new for many people. So we are going to ease into it. First, you will need to go to the Zoom website and create an account. It doesn't cost anything to create an account. When we are going to have a meeting, an email with a link will be sent to you the day before. The email and the link will tell you the date and time of the meeting. You will just need to click on the link when the meeting is ready to start. If you are on a desktop computer you will need a microphone and a camera if you want the other members of the guild to hear and see you (but YOU will be able to hear and see us without it). The other option is an iPad or iPhone (or similar device). They already have a built-in microphone and camera. You will be able to see and hear the other members of the group.

Our plan is to have a practice time so everyone can get used to getting onto a Zoom meeting before the next real guild meeting on July 9th. Our first guild meeting is going to be very simple. VPs will give their reports followed by a show and tell. We are hoping members will send in pictures of the projects (email photo’s to googlemanager@qgplano.org) they have been working on at home during the pandemic. Diane Poor will be our moderator and mute members at times so only one person can tell about their project.  Pictures will need to be sent in ahead of time to give Diane Poor time to put together a slideshow presentation.

Changing the meetings to Zoom is a big change for all of us. But, it allows us to keep meeting as a guild. It has a lot of possibilities too.  We will be adding speakers to our Zoom meetings who can lecture and do demonstrations from their homes.  We can also look at adding other sewing bees or small groups that want to work on a project together. The possibilities are endless. In the upcoming weeks, we will be having information on our guild web page.  So, please check back often. I miss seeing all of you--but until our guild meeting--Stay well and keep on stitching!

Changes to Standing Rules

QGP has by-Laws and Standing Rules that are in place to “aid and assist board members the tasks required to successfully run the guild.” They can be found online under membership and guild documents. By-Laws are filed with the state and if amended, need to be refiled with the state.  Standing rules are rules that can be changed by membership vote.

As the guild grows and changes, so must our governing rules. They are usually reviewed by the board and updated every few years. The previous QGP Boards could not foresee a global pandemic and the need for social distancing, causing the cancellation of all board and guild meetings. These are “Exceptional” times. We need to put in place some new standing rules that will allow the QGP board to continue and change to an online format until it is safe to return to regular meetings.

The board is proposing to make the following changes to our Standing Rules.  Between the Purpose and the Standing Rules insert:

Exceptional Conditions:

1.1 During Federal, State or County emergencies, government guidelines will override our policy and procedures.

  1. Online meetings can take the place of a general meeting.
  2. Guild office terms can be extended with a majority vote at an online or customary general meeting.

We will be having the July guild meeting online with Zoom. We will be discussing and voting on this Standing Rule change.

Programs

By Jeanne Smith

I hope this finds you well and with some unfinished projects completed and new projects started.

Programs are taking a different turn in the near future. Beginning in September at our Zoom based guild meeting, we will be hosting a guest speaker. We are quite excited about this new format of bringing quilting talent to the guild. The speakers that are scheduled for September, October, and November may not be set up for Zoom teaching. In that case, we will reschedule them for the future when we can meet in person and schedule others. A list of speakers will be posted in the August newsletter.

Our workshops through the end of this calendar year are canceled. Those of you signed up already will be issued a refund by August 1.

We are adapting in order to stay well and safe in this challenging time.

Keep sending in photos of your completed workshop projects!

2020 Raffle Quilt

By Donna Petrick

Have you bought your raffle quilt tickets? Are you trying to sell tickets to family and friends? Your guild needs you now. This is the only chance we have of raising funds for the guild this year. We currently have collected just under $3000. Since we will not have a show, we will not have a chance to sell as many tickets as we normally do.  We really need to have everyone helping to raise money on the raffle quilts.

Think of how much you aren’t spending by not having a quilt show. Maybe some of that money can go toward raffle tickets. If you will send a check and address labels to me, I’ll fill them out for you. Joan Hammett and I both have tickets if you want to get some to sell.

The board is planning to offer guild meetings and activities to the membership in a different format due to the Covid-19 quarantine.  We will need money to pay any speakers who may be able to lecture and teach via Zoom.  Please stay engaged in the guild and participate in upcoming activities and buying raffle tickets.

Community Service

By Dolores Williams and Valerie Salter

We have heard from a lot of members that they have been working on Community Service quilts while staying at home. So, on June 9 we had a Drop-off, Pick-up day. It was very successful. We received 57 finished quilts, 79 pillowcases, 21 tops, 5 cuddles, 93 Christmas Stockings and I brought home 10 quilts that needed binding. That was quite a take.

We are so happy that you are thinking about helping people even though we are still staying isolated. We have learned that some, if not all of the organizations are now going to start accepting donations. Thanks to our generous guild members we will be able to send quilts to them.

I have mentioned over the last couple of months that the organization called One Thread, is making masks to donate. We have given them fabric on three occasions, with over 100 yards of fabric going to them. (They are a non-profit organization that teaches sewing and are now concentrating on masks.) They actually reached their goal of 1000 masks, but are going to continue making more. They have donated masks to organizations around Frisco, plus gave out masks at a local grocery store to anyone that wanted some. I am happy we have been able to help.

We will be doing another drop-off/pick-up day in August. The guild will be drawing the winner of our Raffle Quilt on August 8. Since we need a lot of people at the drawing time, we will coordinate with the drawing and do another drop-off and pick-up then. More details will follow in the next newsletter, plus we will have emails go out.

 Keep quilting and safe.

Guild Activities

Hi there all,

Looks like we are moving into the hot dog days of summer.  What better time to stay indoors and sew.

We will have an activity for August. I will have two patterns for a summertime table runner. You will have your pick - show off your applique skills or learn how to applique using this table runner or a table runner using a border print. Stay tuned for details.

It isn’t too late to send me pictures of your ‘quarantine’ quilts for a slideshow I’m in the process of creating. I know you guys got some UFOs done so send me those photos. If you have a story, include that with the photo(s).

Stay cool stay well.

Stocking and Pet Beds Report

By Martha O'Grady

Stockings

Pat Fowler donated two lawn and leaf bags full of Christmas fabric. All of it is neatly folded and looks great on the shelf. I can’t wait until next year to begin to enjoy making kits from this fabric.

Truthfully, I have not worked much on stockings, other than to try to make the formal dining room more useable and appealing.

I have begun to inventory both stockings and goodies. More on that later. We always need homemade items such as coasters. Those are such a favorite with veterans and active service members.

Shelter Pet Beds

I still have not been able to do anything with the shelter pet beds you gave me the day before the lockdown, but keep up the good work. Did you notice that a Plano quilt group was on the news for making masks? Keep doing the textile stuff that blesses others. I say textile because we have branched out beyond just fabric to paper (coffee filters) and other materials. Exciting times!

Recently some of us quilters have been nominating each other for the 10-day quilt challenge. Post a quilt every day for 10 days and nominate another quilter. On Facebook, there are some masterfully done works of sheer genius, but not mine. At first, I did not think I would have 10 quilt photos to post, but I find that I do. None of mine will win best of show. Few have even been photographed! Nope, I make simple quilts as gifts intended for people to use and enjoy. Most of the quilts I have given to folks did not even get a photo! It did not occur to me to document my work until I joined a quilt guild.

So, one dear friend makes art quilts that look like photographs, another designs quilts and writes articles for magazines. And here I am with my 6-inch squares, photos include loved ones. But you know what the best part is? These incredibly gifted and talented artisans consider Me to be THEIR friend!

Special Message from the President

By Linda Neal

QGP Guild Officers for 2020-2021

It's June and time to think about officers for 2020-2021. Due to COVID-19, members have been quarantined, guild meetings/workshops canceled, the church where we meet is not allowing outside groups to use their facility at this time, and our quilt show is canceled. Workshops have been canceled and money refunded, and board meetings are taking place on Zoom. It’s hard to know when things are going to return to "normal." It has been a very challenging few months for the guild board as we have had to navigate through all of these obstacles. The current board of officers has worked well together. We have had to make decisions that are best for the guild, its members, and for the future of the guild.

Normally by June a nominating committee is formed by members at our meeting. But, these are not normal times. We have many members (and board members) who have not left their homes in months, and have no plans to leave their houses. We will not be meeting at Hunter's Glen Baptist Church at least through the summer. So, forming a nominating committee, finding members to serve, presenting a slate of officers at the August meeting, and voting at the September meeting will not happen as outlined in our standing orders and bylaws. Our rules were not written with a pandemic in mind. So, we are having to make unprecedented changes to ensure the guild will have an effective board and can continue on during this pandemic. Every guild, family, and business in the country has had to figure out how to keep things running and moving forward.

With that being said, I think the best way to keep the guild going strong is to continue with the current board of officers. All of the Vice Presidents and myself will have served on the board for 1-2 years when our terms are up this September. But, in order for this board to continue on for another year, we need to amend the standing rules to allow guild officers to serve a 3rd term. Standing rule Number 1 states that board members can only serve two consecutive years. We need to change our standing rules to say that if there are extenuating circumstances, a board member may be able to serve a third term. I think a pandemic certainly qualifies as an extenuating circumstance. To modify our standing rules, we will need 50% of the current membership to vote and approve this change. The voting will take place in July after the July newsletter has come out online. Voting will be online (all of our bylaws and standing rules can be found easily online under Membership - click on guild documents).

In August, we will announce the slate of officers for 2020-2021 and we will accept any nominations from the membership In September, we will vote for the slate of officers (most likely online), induct them into office, and then the board will continue on for another year.

I am also concerned about officers for 2021-2022. I don't think it would be a good idea for the entire board to be replaced by a completely new board. So, by amending our standing rules, the nominating committee could decide to allow a few members to serve a third year for continuity.

Just to recap, here is the 2019-2020 list of board members:

  • President: Linda Neal
  • VP of Community Service: Valerie Salter & Dolores Williams
  • VP of Guild Activities: Leigh Knox
  • VP of Finance: Chanda Smith
  • VP of Education: Kathy Scott/Joan Hammett
  • VP of Membership: Sue Rentz & Karen Edmondson

Letter from the President

By Linda Neal

40 community service quilts quilted by Linda Neal on her Gammill this month.

It’s hard to believe it’s June and we are still having to deal with COVID-19, quarantine, and social distancing. I am tired of cancelling retreats and meeting off of my calendar. I miss my friends, I miss my small group sew days, and I miss our guild meetings together.

I have never had this much “down” time in my entire life. What was on my schedule last week?- nothing. What is on my schedule this week? - nothing. And next week?... Nothing! And yet I am so busy!! About three weeks ago I discovered underneath piles and piles of fabric- I own a Gammill quilting machine. I dusted it off, oiled it, (thanks to Youtube tutorials) loaded a community service quilt, (thanks again Youtube) and I started quilting.

Do you remember the old movie Forrest Gump when Forrest started running? He ran and he ran and then he ran some more. My quilting Community Service quilts have been just like that. I have been quilting in the morning, quilting in the evening, quilting on the weekends. Quilting one top after another. Pantographs, meandering, freehand... Who knew how fun it could be. Apparently it took a pandemic to get me started.

As of today, I have quilted 43 tops for Community Service. Number 44 is loaded and ready to go. Number 45 is on the big board ironing table. I still have a pile of tops in a storage bin. I have a stack of old DVDs I listen to as I quilt. How many tops will I quilt? I’m not sure… How far did Forrest Gump run?

“Life is like a box of chocolates.”- Forrest Gump. Sometimes you get caramel (yum) and sometimes you get coconut (yuck). I have decided to eat the entire box of caramel and enjoy my quarantine time. Quilt, applique, talk to friends, play with my two Great Pyrenees, and do stuff around the house I have been put off for too long.

Now if I only had a computer on my Gammill…

Stay well everyone and know that you are missed. The board is looking into other options for meetings (Zoom etc.) and more information will be coming soon. Keep quilting and keep in touch with one another. Remember- we are all in this together. And if you like to bind- I will be bringing 45+ quilts to the Community Service drop off day (June 9th) that have binding and are ready to go!

Quilt Plano 2020

By Donna Petrick

Quilt Plano 2020-2021

Just to recap what you probably already know, we have cancelled the quilt show for August 7th & 8th, 2020. It’s just too risky at this point. I’m terribly disappointed as I know you are. But there is always next year and we will make it a wonderful show.

The dates have been set for the Quilt Plano 2021 – August 6th and 7th, 2021. We will have most of the event center beginning on Tuesday, August 3rd. Then the complete event center beginning on Thursday. Our deposit for the center was transferred to the 2021 contract. While it shows on this year’s expense, it will actually offset event center charges in 2021.

We will draw for the 2020 raffle quilts at the regular time – 3:30 pm on Saturday, August 8th at the Plano Event Center (in the parking lot) as our tickets state.

Tina Connolly and Pat Fowler are spearheading the 2021 raffle quilt. From what I’ve seen so far, it is stunning.  Their group is very talented and always produces a beautiful quilt.

Raffle Tickets

It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of May and by the time this is read, we will be in June. Since we are not able to meet currently as a guild, we still need to stay involved with the members of the guild. I miss seeing all of you each month. I will be so glad when we are back together.

Some members are sending in their money for raffle tickets. Thank you. If you will send me labels with your name and phone number printed on them, along with your check, I’ll fill out the ticket stubs for you.

Consider buying more raffle tickets with the money you would have spent at the quilt show.

When we have the community service transfer day, June 9th, we will have the raffle tickets with us. (Read more about the transfer day in the Community Service section) If you have ticket stubs to turn in, or money to turn in, or would like to get more tickets, we will be able to take care of it. The CS transfer time will be 10:00 am to 12 pm.  We will be in the parking lot in front of Plano Sewing Center.

Community Service

By Dolores Williams and Valerie Salter

I hope everyone is staying safe.

There will be no Community Sewing Day in June.

Instead, we will have a ‘Drop-Off ---- Pick-Up’ day.

  • When: Tuesday, June 9, 10 am to 12 noon.
  • Where: In front of Plano Sewing Center, 2070 W. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX
  • What: We will accept tops, quilted quilts, finished quilts, pillowcases – just like we do at the meetings.
  • What Not to Bring: Donations of fabrics, books, etc. We cannot store any more donations. Dog Beds. At this time, we are not giving out dog beds so do not want any more to store.
  • What else: Raffle tickets can be dropped off or picked up.
  • Who: Valerie Salter, Dolores Williams, and Donna Petrick will be outside the store in our cars. Our car trunks will be open. We will limit contact.

I have heard from a lot of our members that this self-isolation is allowing us to get a lot of projects done. I like to have simpler projects to do while working on one that requires a lot of thought and work. Community Service quilts are perfect for some simpler projects. I like to experiment with designs and colors on quilts that I don’t need at home so I make the tops for Community Service. Also, quilting a small, simple quilt for Community Service is a good way to practice quilting on your sewing machine.

So come by Plano Sewing Center on June 9, and pick up quilts that are spray-basted and ready to quilt.  We will also have pillowcase kits, quilts that need binding, and some kits to make quilt tops.

Raffle Tickets

Even though our quilt show is cancelled for 2020, we are still required to have the drawing for our raffle quilts on August 8. We had sold tickets before the pandemic and the date for the drawing was on the tickets, so we must do the drawing. The raffle quilt is a major fundraiser for the guild, and it is unfortunate that we will not get many tickets sold this year. So, we figured you can pick up tickets from us to sell. Bring labels and a check if you want to buy the tickets yourself. We can put the labels on for you. Remember the chances of winning are greater when there are fewer tickets sold. Also, this year there are two quilts.

Guild Activities

By Leigh Knox

Hey there everyone out in newsletter land! Are you still out there? Hmmm, rumor has it we are all getting caught up on projects so SHOW ME WHAT YA GOT! I would love for you to send me photos of your bright shining faces and your project(s). Send them to activities@qgplano.org. I have a couple of ideas on what I want to do with them, but until I work out the details (translation: I figure out how to use Powerpoint) it is a secret. Make sure you include your name, pattern name, and the quilts' "story".

Also, I’ve been trying to figure out an activity we could do, and I would love your input. It would help me to know A) do you use Facebook; B) would you be open to using Zoom for a virtual Sit n Sew; C) if I don’t hear from anyone it will tell me no one reads the newsletter; D) you really are happy doing your own thing and don’t really need an activity.

Happy sewing!

The new member retreat has been postponed until early fall. We will notify new members of our chosen date when one is selected.

Stocking and Pet Beds Report

By Martha O'Grady

Stockings

While we make only a small part of the ministry of Soldiers Angels, I think that this thank you note posted to the Soldiers Angels website includes us:

"I would like to say how grateful I am to all of the members associated with this program as it has been a fantastic morale booster for both my current deployment and my deployment back in 2015! Your team truly spreads joy during the hard times and provides a great opportunity of friendship for those of us who are limited on family communications. Between the letters and the care packages to share in the shop, we all feel a little more appreciated out here. For me, it has been the Angels that have given me the support I need to complete the mission and push forward each and every day!  Thank you again, for everything that you and your fellow Angels do!" –Tiffanie (found on Soldiers Angels website 2020)

It would seem that Corona has affected every part of our existence these days. In the email that I got from Soldier’s Angels this month, she talked about how Covid-19 has changed the way that they bless soldiers. She explained that great care must be taken when they try to bless those who are the most vulnerable. Also, gone are donations from businesses that have had to close due to the shutdown.

Here is the website

Masks: I know that many of you have switched from stockings to mask-making. While I cannot “officially” endorse mask-making, I think it is valid to try to find out real information on the topic so that we can make informed decisions on how best to help out in this shortage. There has been some discussion out there in the rest of the world about whether masks accomplish any good. Here is a Pinterest by someone who has done an excellent job of researching juried articles written by people who did real research on materials that people have tried to use.  Some are pretty entertaining.

Her pattern is a good one, as well.

In preparation for our stockings for next year, I could use more Christmas fabric, as well as novelty prints that would make good stockings, also ribbon in red and blue.

Shelter Pet Beds

Linda Neal emailed me to ask whether shelters were taking beds anymore. The articles that I found were all from 2019, well before the lockdown. So, I called the shelters that I take beds to. I got voicemails. One called me back. The guy from Wylie told me that due to Coronavirus, the guidelines that they have to follow are such that they cannot take donations of any kind. So please store the beds that you make for a time this summer when we can once again help in this way. I have one of those giant Rubbermaid tubs that I will be storing mine in until we can begin to take our beds to shelters again. Life will come back sometime this summer. In the meantime keep Pinteresting ideas for things to do with usable scraps. And, if you want to help shelters or pet-related charities, go to their websites and donate money online. Pet needs continue unabated and kitten and puppy season is here.

Donna Petrick did find a shelter that was accepting dog beds and delivered 20 dog beds to Dallas Dog RRR (Rescue, Rehab, Rehome)!

Many of us have been spending even more time in our sewing room than we usually do! While quilting is wonderful exercise for the brain, it may not contribute that much to our overall physical health. It seems like the more we sit, the more we ache! If you already have the green light from your healthcare professional, here are a few stretches specifically for quilters:

AQS – Ten Exercises for Quilters

Quilter’s Planner – Stretches for Quilters

Chair Yoga for Quilters

Of course, before you begin any new type of exercise, please consult with your healthcare professional!

Stay healthy and in shape to continue quilting for a very long time!
