Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

I want to start off with “What A Great Quilt Show” we had!  Carolyn Cosgriff did a wonderful job of leading the committee to a successful show.  And the committee did a marvelous job of making this show super. Good Job to all!

I hope for all of you that you will become very active in the guild.  We have a lot of new quilters to meet and greet.  They have ideas to share with us also.  The guild is a wonderful community.  It needs you to do your part to keep it active and growing.

This is my last newsletter article as president.  I’m stepping down from any guild office, but I will continue to be active in this guild.  I’ve enjoyed it too much over the years to go quietly into the night.  Not a chance of me going quietly anywhere.  I do want to thank all of you for your support over the years.  Thank you to the guild and the board for my retirement gift.  It will be put to good use.

I have plans for some quilts I want to make.  And I’m still in “use my stash” mode.  Possibly some of that stash will make its way to community service before it gets made up……….seems I purchased a lot of fabric that is no longer in my what I want to use now plans.  Our taste changes over time and I don’t want to spend time on something that no longer pleases me.

Again, Thank You for all your support over the years.

QGP Nominating Committee Report

This year’s nominating committee is composed of Linda Chappell, Jeanne Fletcher, Sara Lindsay, Alice Payn, Jeanne Vogel, Pam Walsh and representing the board, Sue Rentz. Four of the 2023-2024 positions will be filled with two members being Co-VP’s.. The positions pictured below will be announced at the August meeting with voting at the September meeting.

Quilt of Valor Presentation

October Guild Meeting - Thursday, October 12, 2023

Speaker: Karen Stone

Karen K. Stone will present early and late quilts as well as works in progress to show her quilt evolution. She has had many national awards winning quilts. Her spiky New York Beauties are well-known.

October Workshop - Friday, October 13, 2023

Instructor:  Karen Stone - Maltese Cross (Lying Ties)

Preserving found fabrics in quilts is a lovely and relevant part of our history, and the beauty and novelty of tie fabric makes them worthy of the honor. Manage the stability issues of silks and polys (or cottons) with machine appliqué for amazing control and accuracy in this extraordinary traditionally pieced block. (Working with tie fabrics is optional.)

October Workshop - Friday, October 14, 2023

Instructor:  Karen Stone -- Improvisational Machine Applique

However it is you've thought about machine appliqué up until now, prepare to be surprised! Karen Stone will offer three innovative methods that lead to your creating free-form lines and curves, all with a beautifully turned edge. (While a machine technique, class time is spent on preparation for sewing, which students will complete at home.)

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

Wow—what an incredible, packed show!  Every aspect exemplified quality.  The mini quilts were wonderful and flew off the wall.  The judged show displayed marvelous quilts.  Kudos to Linda Neal and Jackie Brown for creating the well-deserved Best in Show and to all ribbon winners.  The demos received rave reviews.  Guests were awed by the work of Featured Quilter Rose-Clair Fletcher.  We had almost every volunteer slot filled--a remarkable accomplishment.  The vendors offered a great selection of sought after merchandise.  Great job!

A special thank you for all the media efforts.  Bonnie Landon drives our Facebook and Instagram.  Her creative and regular posts are rightfully the envy of other guilds.  Plus, several members’ posts on NextDoor helped raise awareness of the Show.  Further, Roxy Gross took the traditional publicity up a level in terms of quality and coverage.  All those efforts paid off—a causal survey indicated many attendees were first time quilt show visitors.  Please continue to share the guild posts on Facebook, etc.

Like the Oscars, we can’t thank all who deserve credit.  Dozens and dozens of people contributed to the wonderful show.  It’s been a joy, and growth opportunity, for me to lead this effort the last two years.  With mixed emotions, I pass the baton to Laurie Lumston, knowing she will do a fantastic job!

I gladly accept the baton! I might be crazy, but one thing I have come to realize is that this guild is filled with so many talented, dedicated people that I can’t fail! The show’s success is built on the shoulders of giants like Carolyn and Donna, all the committee members, and all the volunteers who tirelessly gave of themselves to showcase our shared passion for quilting!

The show may have just ended and we’re all exhausted, but the planning for next year is underway! If you were at the show and thought, “hmmmm, I’d love to be part of this amazing group of volunteers,” then we have a baton for you too!

There are still several key roles to be filled for our 2024 Show. If you’re interested in learning more, give me a call and we can find the perfect spot for you to plug in.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to give back to the Guild that gives so much!!

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

I hope this letter finds you all in good health and high spirits.  As we embark on another exciting fiscal year with the Plano Quilt Guild, we want to extend a warm welcome to our new members and express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have been part of our quilting family for years. Together we have created a wonderful community that shares a deep passion for quilting and the power of giving back to our community by sharing a little kindness to those in need.

Community Service has always been at the heart of our guild’s mission, and we are delighted to announce that this coming year, we have some incredible opportunities to make a positive impact on our local community through quilting.  Our community service projects not only allow us to showcase our creativity and skills but also serve as a reminder of the profound difference we can make when we come together with a shared purpose.

Update:

The Plano Quilt Show was wonderful and we had several responses from guests requesting information about Quilts of Valor.  Emails have been sent and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming guild meeting where we will host a Quilts of Valor Presentation to 3-4 local veterans and their families by ‘wrapping’ the veterans in a handmade quilt that has been pieced, quilted, binding attached, label created and sewn on, and donated by several guild members.  Again, our guild members are very generous! I thank you!

You don’t want to miss this!

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Our meetings have been a huge success.  It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs.  A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We also share our samples and ask/answer questions.  Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

The last two months I’ve awarded the Lone Star Award to several of the guild members.  Since we try to keep our business meetings short, I haven’t taken the time to explain about the awards from the guild.  Now is a good time to explain.

We award several different ones for volunteering exceptional time to the guild.  First:  Year Bars--for donating 30 hrs of time to the guild you can receive a “year bar”.  This can include making community service items, going to other guilds selling raffle tickets, or working for any of the different jobs that help.  Second: Presidential Service Awards--some years ago, President Reagan started a program recognizing the work of volunteers all over the US.  For at least 150 hours of work for the guild you can receive a presidential pin and award.  The government has gotten really slow about responding to our request, but we eventually receive the awards.  The awards differ depending on the number of hours donated.  Third: Lone Star Awards--the president of the guild can award Long Star Awards to anyone who does an exceptional job for the guild that is not associated with their own job. Four:  Show Charms.  If you work 4 hours or more for the quilt show, doing anything associated with the quilt show, you can receive a show charm.

I’ve always joked that we work for “junk jewelry”.  But I wear my awards with pride.  I enjoy doing things for the guild and love to see others doing the same.  I encourage you to keep up with your hours and report them to Tisha Harms.  She’s the one that records these hours and keeps up for the first three.  Dolores Williams will keep up the show hours and will hand out the charms at the show.

The one award that we have lost but still hope to recover is the information for our anniversary pins.  When you had been a member for 10 consecutive years you received a 10-year pin, followed by new ones for each additional five years.  In one of our website conversions, we lost the ability to record the hours on the website and have fallen behind in keeping up with the information.  We have not been able to recover, but I’ve not given up hope of going back and recovering.

We are so proud and relieved that the Guild survived the pandemic.  It forced us to grow and change, and we responded well.   Since the pandemic seems to be in the rear view mirror, we are discontinuing the Zoom feature of our meetings when the presentation is in person.  In the future, if the speaker is off-site, the meeting will be on Zoom.

Our next meeting will be preview night at the quilt show.  I hope that you will be able to join us that night and get a look at all the wonderful quilts and exhibits being displayed.  Right now, I still need to finish my workshop samples for the special exhibits display.  I need to quilt two of them and that is a chore for me.  I’ve put it off as long as I can.  Now is the time to finish.

Happy stitching all!

Member Lecture & Quilt of Valor Presentation

Free Standing Lace Lecture by Donna Petrick & Tisha Harms

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

The Show is just days away!  It’s going to be fun.  We have lots of quilts, vendors, and demonstrations.

All entries have been emailed the drop off and pick up instructions, twice-on July 5 and again on July 17-19.  If you haven’t seen yours, please check your spam/junk folder.  If you still don’t find it, email Tisha at showregistration@qgplano.org.  Don’t forget all quilts, including special exhibits, need protection:  a pillowcase with your name and phone number pinned to the pillowcase.  Don’t pin the pillowcase closed so we can’t get the quilt out.

A few dozen volunteer opportunities remain open.  There are a variety of times and types of jobs--sitting or standing. We are still in need of people to shadow the key positions for next year.  Even if you can’t commit at this time, please consider shadowing vendors, set-up and registration.

Volunteers may park in either lot.  The volunteer room has moved to the east entrance due to construction.  You can park at the west entrance, and walk in the air conditioning to the volunteer room to check your purse and check in.  The list of openings is at qgplano.org.  Security and Quilt Angels are needed during the show.

Don’t forget about the raffle quilt.  Please remember to sell your tickets!

The mini-quilt auction pictures are posted on the web site.  Tell your friends-–one need not be present to buy a mini.

There are T-Shirts left in a few sizes.  They will be available at the Event Center, if you want to buy one.  If you have a T-shirt, please wear it in public and tell folks about the show.

This is the final push for publicity and ticket sales.  The publicity team has done a great job!  Postcards were mailed to all prior years’ attendees (excluding guild members).  If you are on Facebook, please share/like the ad posting.  If you are on Nextdoor, please indicate you are coming to the show.  Several members in different neighborhoods have posted on NextDoor.  If you don’t find the Show under events in your neighborhood, please post an event.  Our ad in StarLocalMedia includes a link to buy tickets.  And, of course, remind your friends and neighbors to come! Tickets are available online (www.qgplano.org) until Thursday or at the door.

See you at the Show!

Quilt Show T-Shirts -- $20

T-shirts in a few sizes are still available.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

We are almost through another “year” of the Guild.  Membership runs from October 1 through September 30 each year.  Which means it is time to RENEW again.  As of August 1, we will begin accepting registrations and renewals for the 2023-2024 year.

PLEASE NOTE—we will NOT be taking forms and payments on Thursday, August 10, 2023  at the Preview night.  There is just not enough time to check everyone in for the short meeting, handle renewals, and be able to preview the show.  We WILL have a staffed membership table on Friday and Saturday during the show.

Remember you can always renew on-line, via the mail, or at the next meeting in September.

Please welcome new member Lucy Wang who recently joined the Guild on-line.

And speaking of new members, SAVE THE DATE:  A Sew day for new members who joined this year will be held at Best Little Retreat Center.  Located at Coit and Beltline in Richardson, this is a nice venue to meet with friends and sew on whatever project you’d like.  You will also learn more about the Guild and meet many of the board members.  We have reserved space on Saturday, OCTOBER 7.  New members will receive more information via e-mail, along with a link to sign up.

Quilters Guild of Plano, Inc.

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

We will be meeting in person at the Best Little Retreat Center 7989 N. Beltline Road, Suite 168 Dallas, TX and via Zoom.  If you prefer to attend via Zoom, watch your email for the Zoom link.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

Haven’t we had wonderful programs this year?  I thoroughly enjoyed last month with Catherine Cureton of “Running Doe Quilts.”  She was a fun speaker and had a great trunk show.   I’m also trying to use up a lot of fat quarters so it was inspiring to see her work. The guild already has some of her designs to use in community service and I asked the community service group to pick out three more designs.  (We buy 15 of each design to stay within the copyright rules.)

Carolyn and I will probably both mention this—but if you have workshop projects from this year, please complete the special exhibit form and exhibit them at the quilt show.  Our show visitors always enjoy seeing what we do in workshops and that sometimes is the factor that gets someone to join the guild.  Please participate.

Next question is---have you volunteered for any jobs at the quilt show?  We are going to need a lot more people to do everything that makes our show run smoothly.   Plus, we have some new vendors and some treasured ones returning.  You know you are going to shop the latest designs with them.  Come be part of the volunteers who make this guild quilt show so outstanding.  You can sign up online any time or at the next guild meeting, which will be held at Best Little Retreat Center

After writing this I realize how much I need to do to finish up.

Happy Stitching.  See you at the next meeting.

July Guild Meeting - Thursday, July 13, 2023

Lisa Erlandson is a compulsive quilt collector whose habit has led to several quilt-related specialties.

She is an AQS Certified Appraiser of Quilted Textiles, lecturer, quilt show judge, teacher and quilt historian.  She also owns Le Retreat House in Gainesville, Texas.

She learned to sew as a child but considered it punishment (and maybe it was). She re-discovered sewing in the mid 1980s as a drama teacher and made her first quilt in 1991.

Lisa has an extensive collection of antique quilts that she shares during many of her lectures. She has spoken internationally and teaches and lectures at venues from small local guilds to national quilt shows. She also judges quilt shows ranging from county fairs to statewide shows.  She is a past president of the American Quilt Study Group.

She wrote the pattern instructions for quilts made by AQSG members and published in the 2013 book “Revival! A Study of Early 20th Century Colonial Revival Quilts” published by Kansas City Star Books. She has served as the designer for the  AQSG Quilt Study books “In War Time: A Study of Civil War Era Quilts 1850 – 1865"; "Baskets! A Study of Nineteenth-Century Basket Quilts" and "200 years of Solid Color Quilts: A Quilt Study." Lisa also contributed a chapter in Mary Kerr's book "Southern Quilts."

Lisa is also a quilt maker and has quilts published in "Quilts: Patriotic and Presidential" and the upcoming book "xxxxx", both by Sue Reich.

Lisa has a Master of Arts degree in Public Communication from the University of North Texas.

She taught junior high school, high school and college before deciding to focus on the quilt world.

Quilt Show Preview Night

Preview night is open to quilt entrants, guild members, and their families. Doors at the Plano Event Center open at 6:30 pm.

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

Quilt Plano 2023 is coming together!  By the time you read this, the programs will be at the printer.  Approximately 230 quilts are entered in the judged show.  Save a little spending money for the show.  We are delighted most vendors are returning, along with a few new shops.  Check the website for the full list.   Plus, the mini-quilt auction is full.  The fact that the critical elements are in place is due to the work of many people.  A thank you to all.

The Special Exhibit Entries will be open until July 14th, the day after the July meeting.   Special exhibits demonstrate the breadth of projects members undertake.  The exhibit is designed to showcase workshop projects, guild and small group challenges.   Look for this link under the Quilt Show tab on the web site.  No entry fee.  The link for Special Exhibits is below:

We still need volunteers, over 200 open work shifts remain.  We especially need quilt angels (12 or older) and security Friday and Saturday.  Go to www.qgplano.org and follow the links under Quilt Show, Show Volunteers.  There are opportunities for all types of skills and mobility levels.  A four-hour shift entitles any volunteer to free admission.  The link for volunteering is below:

Show Volunteers

The July meeting is the last day to purchase lunches, $16.  Remember, food cannot be brought into the Event Center on Show days.  Either purchase a snack lunch in advance, or plan to patronize the concession stand.  Bonnie Cook (bcook111698@gmail.com) can help you if you want to secure a lunch before the guild meeting.

Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at the July meeting.  If you have not yet purchased a bundle, please do so.

The demo schedule has one opening.  Vendors and guild members are eligible to present demos of a skill—not offer a product for sale.  If you have interest, or would be willing to serve as a last-minute stand-in, please contact Liz Beaty (lbeatyc@gmail.com)

Tickets are available on the web site.  Children under the age of 12 get in free. Please help spread the word.  Look for the link under Admission or below:

Lastly, the judging seminar that is running parallel to the show has space available.  The registration link is under Workshops on the website or below:

Quilt Show T-Shirts -- $20

Quilt Show T-Shirts are for sale in Medium, XL and 3XL for $20 each.

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

Thank you so much for all of you who spent your time and energy to provide items for our charities! Our totals for June and 2023 are listed below:

June Totals Yearly Totals
Cuddles 48 Cuddles 151
Quilts 38 Quilts 360
Pillowcases 33 Pillowcases 312
Dog Beds 13 Dog Beds 179
Crate Liners 0 Crate Liners 25
TOTAL ITEMS 132 TOTAL ITEMS 1027

OUR NEEDS

We need TWIN SIZE quilts for Samaritan Inn in McKinney.  Samaritan Inn provides temporary housing as part of their holistic approach that supports those experiencing homelessness. Nightly, approximately 160 people sleep at the Inn, of which 1 out of 3 are children. Twin size quilts that we donate help create a sense of “home” and comfort. Please consider enlarging your next top from a lap size quilt  to a twin size.   Any quilt that is in the range of 60-64” wide and 80”-90” in length would help meet this urgent need.

We also need pillowcases! Every quilt we donate also has a matching pillowcase. Don’t forget to pick up a kit at the next meeting!

Finally, we need help piecing yardage to make wide-backs for the long-armers who quilt our Community Service quilts. Please see Valerie Schlake or Pam Walsh at the Community Service table for details.

Are you working on your Birthday Quilt for the 2023 Challenge? It’s easy to participate! Each member who donates a completed quilt (including quilting and binding) in celebration of their birthday month, will be entered into a drawing for a fat quarter bundle. We’ll have the prize on display at the September meeting.

Quilts of Valor

By Evelyn Cheek

The mission of the Quilts of Valor® Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing.

QOVF Core Values:

  • Treating people with respect
  • Promoting excellence
  • Valuing service over self
  • Being accountable

 www.QOVF.org

Our Quilt of Valor Presentation will be held September 14 at our Guild Meeting.  Contact has been made to registered veterans who are so appreciative of our generosity and are so deserving of our huge thank you.  Each will be ‘wrapped’ in a handmade quilt and presented with an authentic certificate following a brief history about the Quilt of Valor Foundation. Bring tissues! It’s proven to be a moving ceremony each time.

Those of you who were kind enough to take quilts to bind and quilt, I have those counted and look forward to you returning them as you finish them up.  We want to acknowledge you for helping with the quilt as we proceed with presentations. All quilts are in easy handled bags and numbered.  A huge thank you to Julie Cohagan for donating her time, talent, and materials to quilt the latest QOV made with fabrics donated to the Guild. I enjoyed taking the time to piece it from a recent QOV pattern and Julie took the time to quilt the prettiest border on the boldest blue with deep gold thread I’ve ever seen! Thank you Julie!! Thank you to Jannette Grimm for additional labels that are being used on quilts turned in. You're a quilting angel! Thank you to Carolyn Cosgriff for picking out red, white, and blue fabric from the donations at last month's meeting and a huge thanks goes to two members who turned in split back star blocks. They’re beautiful!

Speaking of the QOV 2023 block, browse the community service table and have a look at the 2023 QOV block. The pattern is on the QOV website at www.QOVF.org and is available to print. For some of us it’ll be a welcome challenge. For others, it will be a piece of cake to make a few individual blocks using your own fabric for us to send to the national offices of QOV in South Carolina.  Remember a scant quarter inch is your best friend! Make as many as you’d like throughout the year.

As we approach the Plano Quilt Show in less than a month, take note of (just a few) of the patriotic quilts for inspiration to make a donation. Guild members have been very generous in donating pieced tops, completed quilts, split back stars, and fabric to us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This month we have available quilt bags that need:

  • (1) Stars and Stripes needs quilting
  • (1) Pineapple QOV needs quilting

Hoop It Up Bee Donna Petrick

The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom.  We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell.  We are open to all levels of users.  If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us.  Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.

Featherweight Fellowship Groups - Jeanne Vogel

Singer Featherweight sewing machines  make happy owners as we sit and sew. We share tips for caring for the machine, our best notions, and have several members experienced with problem-solving both machine and quilting problems. If you work, join us on a Saturday!  When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending.  Those who have not previously notified me, please email at pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

Please welcome Rosalind Perantie, who joined the Guild in June.

Remember your NAMETAG.  Keep it in your purse or car so you always have it with you on meeting night.  It helps so much in keeping faces and names together.

Just a reminder:  Renewals and new memberships during the show are for the 2023-24 year. Anything before the show is for the current year ending September 30.

New Members:  We will have a new member sew day in September or early October. It will be at the Best Little Retreat Center in Richardson.  The Guild will pay for 50% of the daily fee for new members.  Plan to bring any project you like.   Meet other new members and a number of the guild officers. We generally have a lot of fun at these. Date will be announced in the next newsletter and individual invites will go out shortly thereafter.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

Are you finishing up your quilt show entry?  What about any special exhibits?  We always show finished items from guild workshops.   Personally, I still need to block my quilt entry and attach the label.  Plus I have a couple of workshop projects to get quilted, but plan on having them ready soon.  And then I just keep plugging away on community service quilt tops.

Again this year the embroidery zoom group is going to have an exhibit at the show.  We have a good size group and everyone seems to enjoy working on projects together.  If you are interested in joining the group, let me know so I can send you a zoom link.  We meet the third Thursday each month from 10:00a to 11:00 or 11:30a.  Our exhibit will be free standing lace items that can be hung, such as ornaments, jewelry or room decorations.  If we could find a way to display them, I think the zoom bag making group could put on a great special exhibit at the quilt show.  We are currently making one of two different travel bags.  Some of my overachievers are making both bags.

On to guild business:  to my knowledge, we are still needing someone to be president.  Come On, Ladies.  Stand up and be counted.   And being president is really a good gig.  You have your fingers on the guild’s pulse.  You get to offer up suggestions for growing the guild.  And you work with a delightful group of people.  Please consider taking on this job.

Remember that in June, we have a wonderful donation on quilting items/materials being gifted to the guild members by Betty Moreland’s estate.  She is a former member who wanted to share her bounty with the guild following her death.  Please bring a bag in order to take home your choices.  Community service is also benefiting from these donations.  It will save the guild money, not having to purchase yardage for backing.

In Memory of Betty Lee Mills Moreland

One of our members,  Betty Lee Mills Moreland, passed away on March 30, 2023.  Betty was a member of our guild for over 25 years, but her quilting journey began long before that.  During her lifetime Betty made many, many quilts which she gave to family members, friends, and others she thought needed to be wrapped in the warmth of a quilt.  Betty loved people, she loved quilting, and she really, really loved fabric.  Over those many years of quilting, she accumulated an over-the-top fabric stash.  She knew she would never ever be able to use it all, so it was her wish that any fabric that didn’t make it into one of her quilts be given to the Quilters Guild of Plano.  Because of her generosity, community service is now overflowing with fabric.  So that our members can also share in this gift, we will have a special bones table at the June meeting.  Be sure to stop at the table and take home a remembrance of Betty.  BYOB–bring your own bag!!

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

A huge thank you to all who made the May kick-off a success!  About 6 times as many quilts have been entered in the show as at the same time last year.  Over 80 volunteer slots were filled last month, leaving only 270-2-hour slots.   That’s a bunch, but less than a year ago.  And, the mini-auction is full and starting to collect minis for Quilt Plano 2024!   Plus, to see the amazing quilts of Judy Neimeyer was quite a treat.

What’s next?

There is room for more quilts.   We’d love to fill the Event Center.  Contact showregistration@qgplano.org if you have any trouble entering a quilt or questions.

If you have not yet purchased a lunch for Friday or Saturday and want one, there is still time at the June and July meetings.  $16.  Remember, the Event Center does not allow outside food on those days.

T-shirts are available in most sizes for $20.  These will also be available to purchase at the June and July meetings until sold out.    Please wear your T-shirts in public to spread the word of the show.

Spreading the word is the focus of the next 2 months—we need volunteers and paid admission guests.  Tell your friends, social contacts, neighbors, church buddies, and anyone else you know!  Please share the Guild Facebook posts and find the Event on Nextdoor and indicate you will be attending!

Everything is online at qgplano.org—entry registration, volunteer opportunities, and soon, online ticket sales.

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

Summer is approaching and so is Quilt Plano 2023! Let’s concentrate on getting our quilts finished (if you entered any into the show and still need to quilt and bind before drop-off date) and doing what we can to help with preparing for the show itself. We will resume monthly activities after Quilt Plano 2023 in August!

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

895! 895 is the number of donated items the Quilt Guild of Plano has donated to deserving nonprofits in 2023. It’s all because of the dedication and hard work of each of you willing to give of your sewing talent. We appreciate each of you.

During the June meeting next week, we will have a VERY large number of items for members to select that were received from the estate of Betty Moreland. It will include yardage, packets of FQ’s and patterns. Bring your own bags to take home these goodies.

We need help piecing yardage to make wide-backs for the long-armers who quilt our Community Service quilts. Please see Valerie Schlake or Pam Walsh at the Community Service table for details.

Thank you big time to Carol VanGordon for donating the stars and stripes quilt top!! And did I say thank you to Barbara Collins for donating the QOV pineapple quilt top? It’s lovely. And both of these tops are available for some lucky long armer to take home and quilt! Just send me a text with your name to claim one! (Evelyn  214.415.4496)

Browse the community service table and have a look at the 2023 QOV block. The pattern is on the QOV website at www.QOVF.org and is available to print. For some of us it’ll be a welcome challenge. As you browse the Community Service table (where QOV is located) you may be interested in picking up a Patriotic Quilt Bag to finish. There’s binding, quilting, labels, etc. to be completed for each quilt to be ready to wrap around a deserving veteran later this year. Below is a list of jobs to be done.  Plano quilters (men and women) are sooooooo generous with their time and talents and we see the fruits of our labor each time someone offers to make a donation.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

We  continue to add members to our guild every month. Current membership is 326 members. Please welcome these who joined in May: Christine Becker, Jane Connelly, Rukhsana Iqbal, Judy Hilderbrand, Joni Schon, and Candy Mahaffey.

Remember to wear those nametags.  Keep it in your purse or car so you always have it with you on meeting night.  It helps so much in keeping faces and names together.

We still need 4 more volunteers for the membership table during the show.  This is a job where you get to sit down and talk. Those are strengths for most of us!! Please check the website for Quilt Show/Volunteers for time slots,  or e-mail me at membership@qgplano.org.  ( Note  it is ORG , not com )

Renewals and new memberships during the show are for the 2023-24  year. Anything before the show is for the current year ending September 30.

May 2023 Newsletter

Quilters Guild of Plano, Inc.

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

We will be meeting in person at Hunters Glen Baptist Church, 4001 Custer Road, Plano, TX.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

Time is already flying by.  I have so many things I want to do just in the quilting arena, along with the other part of my life, that I am overloaded with “want to” and short of “time to”.   We had a wonderful workshop this month and I’m very interested in following up with more projects and turning them into wall hangings.  Then I’ve always enjoyed my embroidery machine and like doing projects on it.  I like to make bags.  I always have a couple of community service quilt tops in the works.  And I love to piece quilt tops.  Not enough hours in the day!!  My sewing group already accuses me of not sleeping.  But it’s so much fun to turn out these projects, how can I not spend time doing what I love?

So now you know what I have going on.  What about you?  Are you enjoying your quilting journey?  Are you sharing ideas with others?  What can we do as a guild to help you with your quilting journey?

At our May meeting, we will all get a chance to find parts of the quilt show that interest us the most and sign up to help.  Or maybe you want to learn a new aspect of the show and want to help with something you haven’t yet done.  One of my favorite things about the quilt show is getting to know some of our members better.  This is the time you get to talk and exchange ideas that we don’t always have time for at our regular meetings.

Thank goodness I already have my quilt entry done.  Trying to work towards a second one, but not there yet.  Are you ready?  It’s fun to enter your work in the show.  You don’t enter to “win a ribbon”, you enter to share your work with others.  Your quilt might be the one that spurs someone to try a new technique or a new color way.  We all enjoy seeing the talents of our friends.  So get your entry in and help make our show successful again this year.

Happy Stitching!

Quilt Show Roll Out and Skill Builder Demos

Bones Table (come early & check frequently)

Don’t stay home and miss this meeting! We’ll set up the tables early for you to spread your goodies around. It’s time to share your unwanted, your incomplete, your don’t know why I bought this, your I’m never going to finish these items to give them to someone that needs them! You will be amazed that this can spark someone else’s interest and who will be delighted to finish that uncompleted project.

Got threads, pins, scissors, patterns, books, fabric, kits, scraps, you name it – if it’s in your sewing room, then we’ll give it a new home.

All items not claimed by the end of the night will be given to Lut DeMueulder to take to North Carolina quilters that have lost their jobs in the textile mills. Nice to pass our de-stash to those in need.

Workshop -- JUNE WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Quilt Plano 2023

By Carolyn Cosgriff

The Quilt Guild is a volunteer army.  Pulling the Quilt show off takes time and effort from a lot of people, during the week and well in advance.  Since there isn’t a draft, members need to step up and volunteer.   We are focused on 2023, however, this is the time to build the foundation for the 2024 and beyond shows.  Many of the key functions (including registration, set-up plan, vendor contracts, demo schedule, and program layout) are done well in advance of the show.  The next few months are the best time to learn by shadowing.  Consider shadowing a role even if you might be a year or two away from being able to commit to leading the task.  Like the Board, the Show Committee needs new faces.  Why not you?

The May meeting is the Show Roll-out—It’s your chance to learn about the many roles behind a successful quilt show and sign up.  There are literally hundreds of shifts Tuesday – Saturday.  You will also have a chance to buy lunch for show days, pins, raffle tickets, and show T-shirts—if any are left.  It’s a fun and rewarding way to make new friends, and give back to the guild.

In case you need enticement to attend…Michael Davison secured a large selection of Judy Niemeyer’s quilts to show at the May meeting.  To be clear, these are quilts that Judy made herself from her own patterns. This is a rare opportunity to see in person several of Ms. Niemeyer’s creations.  As you might expect, she joins forces with award winning quilters to produce masterpieces.

Plan to attend the May meeting in person – no zoom!

Registration is open! The early bird discount to enter your quilt in the show at no cost for guild members ($15 for non-members) closes at the May guild meeting.  You need a picture of the completed top and the dimensions to enter.  The registration form is online at www.qgplano.org/quilt-entries/.  There will be friendly faces at the May and June guild meetings with computers to help you with your entry. Just email the picture of your quilt to showregistration@qgplano.org in advance or bring it on a flash drive.  You can enter quilts until the June guild meeting for $20, if you are a member (or $35 for non-members).

Workshop and challenge quilts for special exhibits can also be entered on the guild website through the June guild meeting, no fee.

The mini-quilt auction team is thrilled with the mini’s turned in so far.  We need a few more.   A mini is a quilt no larger than 24” per side.  Please put a sleeve on your mini and bring it to the May guild meeting or community service sew day.

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

The May meeting will keep us busy with Quilt Show coordination and getting organized. Then Summer approaches with graduations and vacations. I will offer up a few challenges for those who do not enjoy idle hands starting in June. Hope to see you all in person at the May meeting!

Community Service

By Bonnie Cook

Thanks again to all of you who continue to go above and beyond to help those in the community who need love and care. In March we delivered 69 quilts and pillowcases, 9 cuddles and 50 dog beds and 21 crate pillows.

We're trying something new for the May meeting. If you have scraps of fabric or batting, bring them to the meeting and we'll have a dog bed ready to fill with scraps to deliver to our four legged friends. Remember, no paper and don't forget to check for pins.

I hope everyone is working on their birthday quilts.

If you have any questions about community service, stop by our table during the meeting and we'll help you out.

Quilts of Valor

By Evelyn Cheek

The mission of the Quilts of Valor® Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing.

QOVF Core Values:

  • Treating people with respect
  • Promoting excellence
  • Valuing service over self
  • Being accountable

 www.QOVF.org

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for the number of quilts, quilt blocks, and quilt labels returned to QOV at the community service table.  It was a great month for us volunteers to commit to working on Quilts of Valor needs.  I’m grateful for our friends, Hariett Wetherall  and Kathy Czekaj for turning in a total of seven Half Square Star Blocks.  (See free pattern at qovf.org). They are beautiful and will be a lovely addition to a donated quilt.

Thank you AGAIN to Jeanette Grimm for making even MORE quilt labels for our QOV.  Not only did she construct what we needed but is donating a few extra for future needs later this fall.  I am more than grateful to her!

Those of you who were kind enough to take quilts to bind and quilt, I have those counted and look forward to you returning them as you finish them up.  We want to acknowledge you for helping with the quilt as we proceed with presentations. All quilts are in easy handled bags and numbered.  A huge thank you to Margaret Bukojoemskyj and Judy Curtis for taking home three quilts to work on.

Browse the community service table and have a look at the new 2023 QOV block.

Feel free to meet me at the table!

This month we have available quilt bags that need:

  •         (2)  backing and quilting

Happy Quilting!

Membership

By Mary Alice Caffarel

Spring has sprung.  I hope no one is impacted adversely by our stormy weather season.

I’ve seen more nametags on members recently.  Please remember to wear it to each meeting.  It helps so much when trying to remember names.

We’ve also had 9 patch blocks being turned in at each meeting. They are much appreciated and keep ‘em coming!

I know we usually have several people sign up for the guild membership as they are entering quilts in the show. Anyone who is signing up at this time is signing up for the 22-23 year, and that membership will expire on September 30 this year.  Please note that membership dues for the 23-24 year will not be accepted until the quilt show.  The guild “year” begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. I just wanted all to be clear on this.

I will have to give up the membership chair this year. If anyone is interested in taking this over, please give me a call.  469-222-8012. (Leave a message if I don’t answer and I’ll call you back) It is not a difficult job, especially compared to some others.
