September 2022 Newsletter

Quilters Guild of Plano, Inc.

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, September 8 2022.

We will be meeting in person at Hunters Glen Baptist Church, 4001 Custer Road, Plano, TX, and via Zoom.  Watch your email for the Zoom link.

Letter from the President

By Donna Petrick

Wow!  What a quilt show!!  Congratulations to Carolyn, her committee and all the members who helped out with our wonderful show.  It was quite a hit.  We have had lots of positive comments.  We were slow getting volunteers, but in the end you stepped up once again.  Thank you to all who participated.  We won’t know the financials for a while because the last invoices are still coming in.  But because we have a quilt show each year we get to have a great variety of programs and workshops.  We get to help organizations in our community by furnishing quilts and other items for their clients.  We get to teach others how to quilt and help them gain a new hobby or art skill.  Thanks again.

Now that we have gotten to know each other a little better from being at the quilt show, I really hope more of you will attend the meetings in person when you can.  It’s really nice to put a name and face together.  We can share more information when we are in person.  Plus, a number of new members joined at the show.  We want to encourage them to keep coming to guild meetings.  Come on back and let’s keep moving the guild forward.  That being said, we still will Zoom.  We have out of town members who can’t make it in for meetings and we have members who don’t drive at night any longer.  I don’t want to lose any of them.

At the September meeting we will vote on the board positions for fiscal year 2022/23.  I know that a number of you will be at retreat.  Please try to Zoom with us for awhile or for the whole meeting. You can vote and watch our speaker and keep on sewing.

See you soon and keep on sewing.

PS:  I have two pair of glasses left from quilt show lost and found.  If you are missing a pair let me know.

September Guild Meeting - Thursday, September 8, 2022

Carol Morrissey
Lecture -- Confessions of an Absent-Minded Quilter

Carol Morrissey is a fifth-generation Texas quilter who embraces that heritage with enthusiasm. Her work reflects her love of photography, gardening, nature, and painting. Carol began sewing clothing as a child but didn't make her first quilt until she was in her thirties. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally and is in many private collections. She enjoys providing programs and workshops to quilt guilds and other groups, sharing her love of quilting, her inspirations, and her techniques with others.

Workshop: Fabric Post Cards

Date:  Friday, September 9, 2022,

Time:  9:00am – 3:00pm (1 hour lunch break)

Location:  Best Little Retreat Center of Texas, 7989 Belt Line Rd Ste #168, Dallas, TX 75248

Workshop Fee:  $45.00

This has been Carol's most popular workshop for several years.  These colorful little pieces are fun to create, they're quick, and they make great gifts.  Plus, they're a standard size, so they can be easily and inexpensively framed!  Carol has three different postcard collections from which to choose (pattern purchase is required for the workshop).  And, as a bonus, if you give Carol enough advance notice, she will design a couple of original postcards just for your group!  Class duration is typically five to six hours.

****** NOTE THE CORRECTION TO THE SATURDAY WORKSHOP BELOW *****

Workshop: Hippy Dippy Dot Collage

Date:  Saturday, September 10, 2022,

Time:  10:00am - 4:00pm  (1/2 hour lunch)

Location:  Best Little Retreat Center of Texas, 7989 Belt Line Rd Ste #168, Dallas, TX 75248

Workshop Fee:  $45.00

Join Carol for this fun, fused project! We’ll experiment with positive and negative shapes while playing with color and design elements. The class project is a wall hanging measuring approximately 20” x 27” (up to 20” x 36”). Carol will offer suggestions for several ways to use these fused collages. She will also give you a free pattern for a mini journal cover that you can make later from a small fabric collage. Carol will bring her die cutters and a variety of circle dies for you to use. No sewing machine is required unless you wish to work on the mini journal cover during the class.

Workshop Sign-Up Issues

If you encounter a problem when using the website to sign up for a workshop, you can sign up at a meeting or you can mail your check (made out to the Quilter's Guild of Plano) to Tisha Harms (3202 Grantham Drive, Richardson, Texas 75082).  Please indicate which workshops you are signing up for.  If you have any questions, call Tisha at 214-316-5066 or email her at tisha.harms@gmail.com.

Quilt Show

By Carolyn Cosgriff

It’s amazing how many people it takes to pull off a quilt show—and we did it.   We had a few snags along the way, but all the volunteers reacted with the charm and grace that would have made your mothers proud.  Thank you for all the work and long hours!

Lost & Found is at my house.  Call if you left anything behind at the show.  Also, there are a couple of extra peach T-Shirts, one Medium and one Large.  Let me know if you want one ($15 - post show special rate!) or paid for one and I have not been in contact with you about pick-up.

It was such a joy to be part of Quilt Plano 2022, I’m excited about Quilt Plano 2023!  Below is a picture of the Raffle Quilt (front and back).  It was made by J Michelle Watts and has been re-gifted to the guild, and we can’t believe our good fortune.  While there isn’t much to be done before spring, we are filling the committee roles.  Among the roles open are taking the raffle quilt to other guild meetings, demonstrations, special exhibits, food, and quilt angels.  If you have any inkling of interest in working on the show, please call me, 469-387-0033.  It’s a fun way to get to know people.

Community Service

By Linda Neal

This is my last newsletter as VP of Community Service.  I would like to thank Donna Petrick and the Wednesday Girls for all of their help and support the last 2 years.   I would also like to thank all of the QGP members for all of the sewing, quilting, and binding you have done.  And the pillowcases!!  We have given pillowcases with every quilt, plus stacks and stacks of them delivered to the charities that request extra pillow cases.   It really does take a village to make and distribute as many quilts as we do!  We should have the final totals in soon.

Bonnie Cook will be the new VP of Community Service.  She has a team to help her too.  Thank  you to: Pam Walsh, Fabric Supply and Quilt Delivery • Valerie Schlake, Community Sew Days • Laurie Lumston, Community Outreach • Barbara Pepin, Fabric Manager and Quilt Delivery • Evelyn Cheek, Quilts of Valor • LaDawn Daley, Quilt Delivery.  It is great to have such a large team to manage Community Service for our large and active guild.

For now, keep on sewing!  I will keep on quilting.  And QGP Community Service will have another great year.

Guild Activities

By Michael Davison

It’s time to do something fun! The Shades of Blue & White: Floating Point Star block exchange will be announced at the September Guild Meeting. This is a combination challenge/block exchange – participate at whatever level you would like. You could make a small wall hanging or quilt on your own with your own blocks. Or you might like to exchange blocks with guildmates! Bring your block(s) to the DECEMBER CHRISTMAS guild meeting. As many blocks as you bring, you will get to take home from the other participants.

The Floating Point Star pattern includes generous seam allowance so that you will square your blocks up and then still have floating points after you sew your ¼” seam, so if you’re a little big or shy on your ¼”, there is plenty of room to get accurate blocks. Shades of Blue & White means that your block background will be white, cream, tan or somewhere in between (low volume prints or something that is solid or reads solid). Your star centers and points should be a shade of blue - anything ranging from blue to teal to navy. The pattern will explain everything. Sample block shown here.

A video of block construction will be available soon and posted to the website and Facebook group.

If you work, join us on a Saturday!  When we share a lot of tips and tricks we follow the meeting with an email to those attending.  Those who have not previously notified me, please email pickincotton26@verizon.net to get the invitation to join the Zoom meeting.

Pieceful Organization - Sarah Krauss & Jeanne Vogel   (Now we will meet twice a month!)

If you are feeling “abode overload," we will:  relieve clutter, stress, struggle and feelings of being overwhelmed.  We are Zooming on the 3rd and the 4th Wednesday's from 1:30-3:30 pm using the inspiration from a workshop we attended.  Organization will change your clutter and chaos to start the day fresh with your stuff organized.  Less chaos leads to more productive quilt making.  Please contact pickincotton26@verizon.net for an invitation.

Free Motion Quilting Bee (we actually sew during the meeting!) – Monica Hendewerk

Our meetings have been a huge success.  It turns out that Zoom blocks out background noise, so we can sew and chat at the same time!  Monica or one of the other members provide some designs to practice on a small sandwich which you can choose to use or not.  The designs are sent out in advance and include step by step instructions, with both beginner and intermediate designs.  A number of us generally “doodle” on paper first, and then sew.  Some people do the designs that have been sent out, others do their own thing.  We have beginner beginners all the way to advanced members of the group.  We also share our samples and ask/answer questions.  Meetings are on the second Monday of the month, from 1:00 – 3:00 (or longer sometimes!).  Please contact Monica so that she can send you the Zoom link if you are interested.  mhendewerk@gmail.com  (713) 569-8798

Hoop It Up Bee Donna Petrick

The machine embroidery group meets the third Thursday each month on Zoom.  We talk about problems or successes we might have had in using our machines as well as having show and tell.  We are open to all levels of users.  If you have an interest in machine embroidery, please join us.  Email me petrickdl@outlook.com so I can send you the Zoom invitation.
