Quilt Plano 2024

By Laurie Lumston

WOW! What a show! I hope all of you were able to come see the phenomenal quilt entries by many of our members! I’ve heard that this year’s show had the best quilting talent they’d ever seen! So kudos to those who entered a quilt!

And a huge round of applause for those who volunteered and served on the QP24 committee!

We absolutely could not have had such a successful show without the support and efforts of this group! Many, many hours were invested into fulfilling our Guild’s mission of uniting individuals who have a passion for quilts and the art of quilting! So, BRAVO!!!!

We’ll have more updates to share with you next month as we close out the financial reports. If you want to be part of this amazing team, give me or Carol Truscott a shout! We’re gonna take a breather for a few months and then kick back into planning mode this Fall! We also welcome your feedback and best practices. Did you like what you saw or do you have ideas for improving the event? Reach out to me or Carol. It’s a team effort!

Again, thank you!!

Congratulations to Tammy Schwab, the winner of the Quilt Plano 2024 Raffle Quilt – "Timeless Starburst"

Community Service

By Debbie Blair and Val Schlake

September is here and the cooler weather is on its way, I think we are all ready for fall!

We are excited to announce that we will make and beat all of our goals for this fiscal year!  Many thanks to all who have participated in helping make that happen, it takes a village.  As we move forward into the next fiscal year, we are looking for a few additional team members to help cut quilt kits, prep quilts, prep projects and/or participate in our sew and work days. Do you enjoy working with fabric?  Would you like to meet new people?  Do you have 6 to 8 hours a month? Do you want to help those in need of a little kindness? ...then you should consider being part of our Community Service Team.  We all enjoy what we do and want to expand our reach.  Whether you have little or a lot of time to give, we have something for everyone to become involved in this wonderful mission.  For more information on how to get involved, feel free to contact us. Or stop by our table at the guild meeting.  We would love to talk with you.

Did you know that September 21st is National Jelly Roll Day?  I am pretty sure we all have a Jelly Roll in our stash that we never got around to using up. Please consider donating at least one Jelly Roll at the September Quilt Meeting. We will have a drawing during the meeting for all who participate.

And Last: Please remember the Plano Quilt Guild when cleaning out your sewing areas or know of someone who is…we are in need of cotton fabrics and baby flannels.  We are happy to arrange for pickup and or delivery.  Please feel free to call us or contact us by email: Thanks for all you do, we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Letter from the President

By Jeanne Vogel

Letter from the President

The Purpose of the Quilters Guild of Plano is to unite individuals who have a passion for quilts and the art of quilting! And then there was the Quilt Show! We brought together a venue to showcase our workshops, our passion for piecing, quilting, machine embroidery, bags, the Riley Blake challenge, the ‘60’s challenge, and the art quilts with vendors, visitors and volunteers!

It was so amazing to see how many gathered together to make taking down the quilts so easy and quick. We learn so much each year but so many compliments were heard regarding how friendly the volunteers were this year. Hats off to the leadership of Laurie Lumston, our Quilt Show ‘24 chair (and chair for ‘25), and to Carol Truscott, our co-chair in training for 2026.

If you want to see another photo of all the quilts, just log into the website, go to Gallery on the red menu bar, 2024, and there are 3 groups to see all the quilts including the mini quilts for the auction. Our thanks to our photographer Dena Smith for capturing all the displays.

September 12 guild meeting will be for voting and electing the officers for our fiscal year starting Oct ‘24 through Sept ‘25. Our thanks to the nominating committee for getting all of the positions filled.

And the biggest Thank You to all the volunteers that got their scissors charm to add to their bar. Tisha Ann Harms will be at the meeting to add yours if you need help.

We were happy to see so many of you at the Quilt Show! We welcomed 25 new members. Wow and welcome! There were many who also took the time to renew while there. You can begin renewing for 2024-2025 now of course; either online with credit, or at the meeting with check or cash only. It will run from sign up through October 2025.

There were interested folks at the show who thought they might like to come as a guest to one of our monthly meetings to check us out before joining. As you see guests, and of course new members, be welcoming and show that Plano Guild spirit!

Quilts of Valor

By Carolyn Cosgriff

The guild has been invited to participate in the East Plano Rotary Veterans Day celebration again this November. However, we need to finish a few quilts in order to accept. If you have a work in progress, please alert me at 469-387-0033.

As a reminder, the recommended size of a Quilt of Valor is 60″ x 80″; it must be a minimum of 55″ x 65″ and maximum of 72″ x 90".  Bold red, white and blue quilts are popular. No flag fabric please as some service personnel are not comfortable cuddling up with a flag of any sort.

Guild members have been extremely generous with their long arm time and creativity. Judy Horton is among those who have quilted several.  Here’s one she did, combining it with a fun butterfly backing that was donated. The only thing that makes this a less than 100% perfect quilt is the top maker didn’t pin her/his name to it.  Please take credit for your work. The recipient always wants to know who made the quilt. If you made this quilt, please call or text me at the above number.

Education

By Liz Beaty and Lorrie Gray

Be sure to stop by the Education table at the September meeting to see Liz and Lorrie’s latest helpful quilting tip.

If you have a suggestion for a future demo or would like to volunteer to do a demo, please either talk to Liz or Lorrie at a guild meeting or fill out this simple Google form to give your ideas:  Education Demo Ideas

Quilt Judging Seminar

By Diane Poor

The recent NACQJ Intro to Quilt Judging Seminar at the Quilt Plano 2024 show was a resounding success, bringing together 15 dedicated attendees from across the country, including Georgia, Texas, and South Carolina. This comprehensive seminar provided an in-depth exploration of key aspects of quilt judging, focusing on essential workmanship techniques, the art of judging professionalism, and innovative design concepts. Participants gained valuable insights into the critical elements that contribute to high-quality quilt evaluations.

In addition to the core judging skills, the seminar also delved into the logistics of managing a quilt show, equipping attendees with practical knowledge to enhance their future events. The hands-on approach and expert instruction ensured that each participant left with a thorough understanding of both the artistic and organizational facets of quilt judging. This event not only enriched their professional skills but also fostered a strong network among quilters nationwide.
